George Lambert (singer)

George James Lambert (born December 17, 1900 in Long Preston , † September 13, 1971 in Toronto ) was a Canadian singer (baritone) and music teacher of English origin.

Live and act

Lambert was a choirboy in Ribblesdale and began his vocal training after the First World War with Frederic Lord . He performed as an oratorio singer and was also a professional football player. In the mid-1920s he continued his training in Rome with Alfredo Martino and made his operatic debut as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata . After his return to England he took further lessons from Henry Wood and performed at concerts and on the radio.

Later he went to Canada with his teacher Frederic Lord. There he performed as a singer in the 1930s and 1940s, often with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . Among other things, he sang Christ in Ernest MacMillan's annual performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion from 1938 to 1945 . One of his last roles was that of Cathva in the world premiere of Healey Willan's Deirdre .

From 1932 Lambert taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music ; 1938-39 was President of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association . After the end of his active singing career in 1946, he devoted himself entirely to singing lessons. His students included, among many others, Léonard Bilodeau , Jean Bonhomme , Pierre Boutet , Victor Braun , John Dodington , Audrey Farnell , Don Garrard , Robert Goulet , Doreen Hume , Gwenlynn Little , Phyllis Mailing , Ermanno Mauro , Joan Maxwell , David Mills , Peter Milne , Bernard Turgeon , Jon Vickers , Alan Woodrow, and Lesia Zubrack Romanoff .
