Lutz Bacher (born September 21, 1943 - † May 14, 2019 in Manhattan , New York City , New York ) was an American artist who had worked since the 1970s. She was from Berkeley , California and lived in New York. The name Lutz Bacher is a pseudonym . In the 1970s, their gender was also unknown to the public. She taught for a while at UCLA , where Trisha Donnelly studied with her. For a long time she was considered a cult figure in the art scene, but since the beginning of the 2010s she has also gained attention from a larger audience.

Bacher's work includes videos , photographs, and sculptures . Much of this work includes elements of popular culture, personal artifacts, and found objects. Her work resists recognisability and categorization and deals with questions about identity, sexuality and the body.

Exhibitions

In her more than 40-year career, Bacher has shown her works in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, such as the Berkeley Art Museum and the Ratio 3 Gallery in San Francisco . Museum solo exhibitions took place in the Secession , Vienna (2016); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2014); National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen (2014); and Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2008).

Further solo exhibitions took place in the Portikus in Frankfurt, Germany at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, UK and in the Kunsthalle Zürich . These three institutions published the first monographic publication on Bacher's extensive oeuvre. In 2009 her multimedia work was shown in MY SECRET LIFE at PS1 MoMA in New York City, which was also her first retrospective.
