Trisha Donnelly

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trisha Donnelly (born April 22, 1974 in Los Angeles ) is an American artist who works with a wide variety of media such as photography , audio and video media, drawing, sculpture and performances.

Life

Part of the artist's artistic strategy is to reveal little about her personal life. The same biographical information is as follows: Trisha Donnelly graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles in 1995 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and from Yale University in 2000 she completed her master’s degree (MFA). Since 2008 Donnelly has been teaching at the Art and Art Professions Department of the Steinhardt School at New York University . In 2012 she lived in San Francisco , California .

Actions

The artist became known for short, ephemeral appearances, which she calls demonstrations . In 2001 she disguised herself as a Napoleonic courier and rode through the evening Manhattan to the Casey Kaplan Gallery in Chelsea , where she read a message from a white horse: "Shut up and listen to me. I am just a messenger. But I bring news of the destruction. If the word surrender is really necessary, so be it. [...] The emperor has fallen, he puts his burden on your soul and mine, and with this I am electric. I'm electric. ” An action and message that seemed unusual after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , especially because the artist then turned her horse and disappeared into the night.

sculpture

In her sculptural work, Donnelly uses massive stone sculptures to counter her fleeting, intangible actions. She works on large marble tablets, which she grinds into fragile, flat structures and in which she scratches archaic symbols. She hollowed out marble blocks to the brink of their fragility and formed structures that are reminiscent of hot water radiators. She mills simple patterns and fragmentary characters into massive, square limestone blocks. She incorporates the sculptural work into sound and video installations at exhibitions.

Documenta 13

Donnelly was a participant in documenta 13 .
