Otto Waffenschmied (actually: Otto Wawrzyckek ; born June 16, 1901 in Vienna , † June 5, 1971 in Hamburg ) was an Austrian illustrator, cartoonist and author. He was best known as the editor and designer of the comic magazine Dideldum , in which he signed his articles as Uncle Dideldum .

Life

Gunsmith was the second of five children of the Silesian policeman Adolf Wawrzyckek and his wife Emilie, born in Vienna, born Pfingstl. After attending secondary school, he entered the arts and crafts school in October 1917 with the professional goal of interior decorating , which he left in June 1919 with the certificate of leaving. In the meantime, in July 1918, his family had been renamed Waffenschmied. After spending some time in Denmark, Waffenschmied settled in Hamburg and, supported by his wife Eva, née Steinkrauss (* December 8, 1901, † November 11, 1968), published the comic magazine Dideldum from 1929 , which was subscribed to could be obtained from several department store chains, including Karstadt , but was used as an advertising medium. Waffenschmied's play Klaus und Peter, Die Weihnachtsflieger was performed by the Hamburger Schauspielhaus in the winter of 1934/1935 . In 1937 and 1938 he drew a series of comics for the Hamburger Illustrierte entitled The Master Detective , which, in contrast to Waffenschmied's other works, was subtitled in prose. In the time until Dideldum was discontinued in 1941, the year he was drafted, Waffenschmied also published several children's books. After the war Waffenschmied failed with his attempt to revive Dideldum , so that he had to make a living in the art and antiques trade.
