Dominique Arribagé (born May 11, 1971 in Suresnes ) is a former French football player and current coach .

Career

Youth (until 1992)

Arribagé was seven years old when he started playing football for the US Colomiers youth team from the Toulouse area . At first he took part in the storm , but moved into the second half in his first game for the youth team in defense and stayed there. He went through several junior age groups at Colomiers before he was allowed to play for the first time for the sixth-class men's team at the age of 16. In 1990 he moved to the neighboring third division club AS Muret and wore their jersey while he was a math student. At Muret he was able to present himself on a national stage and in the spring of 1992 aroused the interest of the first division clubs FC Nantes and AS Saint-Étienne . A little later, the nearby first division club FC Toulouse contacted him and was able to win the young player in June 1992.

First years with Toulouse (1992–1998)

After having to wait a few game days, the then 21-year-old completed his first encounter in the top French division on September 22, 1992 in a 2-3 defeat in Saint-Étienne. He then advanced to become an undisputed regular player, continued his basic studies at the same time and graduated in 1993. At the end of the 1993/94 season he had to accept relegation to the second division with Toulouse, but remained loyal to the club. In 1995 as well as 1996 the resurgence was missed, which finally succeeded in 1997. In particular, the weakest attack in the league (26 goals) brought the team in the following 1997/98 season in great distress, but thanks to the relatively strong defense around Arribagé, the relegation could just be averted. In September 1997 he was tested positive for nandrolone during a doping control and was banned for six months. Although Arribagé still had a valid contract, he saw the time for a farewell at the end of this season and used a release clause to move to league rivals Stade Rennes . For Toulouse FC this meant a strong weakening, but the Rennes club received the transfer fee of two million francs stipulated in the clause.

Leading player in Rennes (1998-2004)

Immediately after his move to Rennes in the summer of 1998, the message that Arribagé was imminent was about to be suspended for six months. This was based on a sample from the autumn of 1997 that showed a positive result for the banned steroid nandrolone . However, the professional himself protested his innocence and after a few weeks the ban was lifted by court decision, so that he was able to stand for Rennes for the first time on September 25, 1998 in a 4-0 defeat against Girondins Bordeaux . In the following time he became one of the top performers in the team, with whom he was significantly more successful in terms of placement than before with Toulouse and in 1999 with fifth place made it into the Intertoto Cup . This succeeded again in 2001, even if the qualification for the UEFA Cup made possible by the competition was missed.

At times he even took on the role of team captain at Rennes and was particularly notable in these years for his headball strength, which helped him to score goals several times in occasional offensive actions. In the 2002/03 season he contributed a remarkable five hits for a defender. When he received an offer from his former employer, FC Toulouse, in 2004 after six years in Brittany, he was allowed to transfer to the latter for free, although his contract with Rennes would have been valid for another year.

Return to Toulouse (2004-2008)

At Toulouse FC, who last returned to the top league in 2003, the now 33-year-old was supposed to stabilize the defensive line, which consisted mainly of young players, and took on the leading role in it. In the following seasons he remained an integral part of the team with which he first had to fight relegation before reaching third place in 2007 and thus qualifying for the qualifying round for the Champions League. During the preparation for the 2007/08 season, however, he suffered from bad luck with injuries and a potential competitor was loaned out with Mauro Cetto from FC Nantes . He had to watch when his colleagues were clearly defeated against Liverpool and the team was therefore only allowed to compete in the UEFA Cup. In autumn 2007 he finally managed to return completely and he was then able to participate in four European Cup games. At the end of the 2007/08 season he asked for another contract extension despite his 37 years, but then ended his active career after 388 first division games with 20 goals and 85 second division games with seven goals.

Next life

Although he ended his career in 2008, he remained loyal to Toulouse FC as he took on a role as person responsible for signing new players and from then on carried out this permanently. In 2014, his wife Laurence Arribagé (* 1970) was first elected Deputy Mayor of Toulouse and shortly afterwards in a by-election to the National Assembly. In March 2015 he made a career leap himself when he was promoted to head coach of the professional team at the first division club Toulouse. Since he was in acute danger of relegation with the team in the following season, he was dismissed in February 2016.
