Marc Luy (born February 2, 1971 in Nuremberg ) is a German population scientist who studies the determinants of life expectancy . The main focus of his work is research into the causes of male excess mortality . His best-known work is the " monastery study ", an ongoing analysis of the life expectancy of members of the order in comparison with the general population.

Live and act

In 1991, Luy enrolled at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg for a teaching degree in geography , English and German . In 1993 he switched to the diploma course in geography with the minor subjects demography , urbanism and social planning , which he graduated in 1998 with a diploma in geography. This was followed by activities as a research assistant at the University of Rostock , the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock and the Federal Institute for Population Research in Wiesbaden. In 2004 he received his doctorate in demography on the subject of mortality analysis in historical demography at the University of Rostock, where he was appointed junior professor for demography and its areas of application in the same year. After a successful interim evaluation (which is generally regarded as the equivalent of the traditional habilitation), he moved to the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences as a Senior Scientist in 2008 , where he has headed the research group for health and life expectancy since 2010. Luy has taught at other universities, namely in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main as well as at the European Doctoral School of Demography of the European Association for Population Studies.

Luy received various scientific awards, including in 1998 the first prize in the young scientist competition of the German Foundation for World Population and the German Society for Population Science , in 2003 the Gunther Beyer Award of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) and in 2010 an ERC Starting Grant of the European Research Council to expand the monastery study. Luy received further recognition for his scientific work in 2009 in the form of a visiting professor at the University of La Sapienza in Rome and in 2011 when he was elected to the “Young Curia” of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and was appointed to the expert group for population projections of the German Federal Statistical Office . Since June 2012 he has been Secretary General of the European Society for Population Research. In 2016 he was elected to the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Luy has written more than 50 research papers, including in journals with high impact factors such as Demography, Population and Development Review and Population Studies.

From 1989 until his appointment to the University of Rostock, Luy was football referee for the German regional and amateur league .

His monastery study was taken up several times in other publications. Eckart von Hirschhausen deals with the monastery study in a chapter of his book "The liver grows with its tasks" Ralf Bönt processed the findings of the monastery study in his book "The dishonored gender: A necessary manifesto for men"
