Paul-Hermann Gruner (born September 28, 1959 in Rüsselsheim ) is a German political scientist , journalist , writer and visual artist .

Life

Paul-Hermann Gruner was born as the third child of the internist Paul Gruner and the pediatric nurse Gabriele Gruner. He was born in the Opel city of Rüsselsheim and later wrote about it like this: “In this city you either become a car or an author ”.

After graduating from the Immanuel Kant School in Rüsselsheim and doing community service , Gruner studied political science , history and general education from 1981 to 1987 at what is now the Technical University of Darmstadt with the degrees Magister Artium (MA) and Dr. phil. His master's thesis with the main title The Staged Polarization is a language and ideology-critical comparison of the campaign language in the federal election campaigns of 1957 and 1987 and was published as a book in 1990.

Gruner had been writing novels since he was 15. His texts were first published in 1984. Later texts appeared in literary magazines such as Lichtungen (Graz) and New German Literature (ndl, Berlin).

Since 1977 Gruner has also been active as a visual artist (object, assembly, installation). Inspired by the imagery of Dada ( Marcel Duchamp , Max Ernst , Kurt Schwitters ), Polish poster art, the creative experiments in photo journalism and poster design of the Weimar Republic (especially: Heartfield, Umbo), the political caricature of the Federal Republic (especially Horst Haitzinger ) As well as the politically directly involved poster art of the early 1970s ( Klaus Staeck , Ernst Volland , Tomi Ungerer ), Gruner developed works on paper (collage: chiasmage, confrontation, assemblage), through object assembly and ready-made to three-dimensional objects and installations his critical-expressive personal style. In 1981 he went public with his first major solo exhibition. Thematically, however, not only the social is visible in his work (ideology, violence, wealth vs. poverty, technology vs. nature): "Everything is political", he says, "even eat gummy bears"

From 1985 to 1996 Gruner worked as a freelance journalist. He wrote record, CD, concert and book reviews as well as texts on the history of culture and mentality for regional and national newspapers and magazines, including New Political Literature , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Darmstädter Echo , Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung , Mannheimer Morgen , Rheinischer Merkur , Jazz -Thetik, Büchner Kulturmagazin, Vorwärts , seldom also for the radio ( NDR , Hessischer Rundfunk ). From 1996 to 2016 he was editor of the daily Darmstädter Echo.

Gruner's satirical novel Wunderlich und die Logic , published in 2012, and his short stories published in 2014 under the title La Tour du Mariage met with a positive response .

Gruner wrote texts a. a. for the cabaret artist Dieter Hildebrandt , the Cicero , Deutschlandradio Kultur and the Munzinger archive . He is a member of the Social Democratic Party, a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Association of German Writers (VS). He acts as managing director for the Society of Hessian Literature Friends. Gruner has lived in Darmstadt since the early 1980s.
