The history of today's school goes back to a private school that was founded on May 27, 1896 by wealthy citizens of Rüsselsheim. They wanted to save their children the train ride to Mainz to one of the secondary schools there. The school was initially housed in an extension belonging to the Rüsselsheim factory owner Paul Hessemer . The community took over the school in 1897 and converted it into the "Higher Citizens School". The school's first board of trustees included the founder Hessemer and the mayor of the city, Jakob Sittmann. At that time, 45 children were attending school, about a third of them girls.

In 1898 the school was subordinated to the school department of the Ministry of the Interior in Darmstadt. She also moved to her first address at Schäfergasse 16. The building there was built by Paul Hessemer especially for the school. In 1910 the next move took place in a building belonging to the local trade association. The number of pupils and teachers was then constantly increasing.

During the First World War , the school lost several teachers, including the school principal Seibert. The students were involved in agricultural work, repeated missed lessons dominated everyday life. After the First World War, the school suffered from the effects of the French occupation. Nevertheless, the number of students grew steadily. In 1922, the 10th grade (sub-second) was introduced. The responsible ministry allowed the school to be expanded into a “Realschule under development” with the aim of turning it into a Realschule. In 1925 the school moved into the former primary school building at Schulstrasse 8. The move had become necessary due to the increased number of students. In 1928 the Hessian Minister for Culture and Education awarded the school the title Realschule.

In 1932/33 the school building was given an extension that accommodated six classes.

In 1937 the school was named "Oberschule für Junge" (high school for boys) and became a so-called "full institution". That meant that she could award the school-leaving certificate, i.e. the Abitur. Due to the shortened school time in the upper level (two instead of three years), the first ten students (nine boys, one girl) passed the Abitur in 1939.

In 1937/38, additional rooms in the directly adjacent trade school had to be rented to cope with the lack of space. On January 17, 1938, the school's first gym was inaugurated. At the end of 1938 the city bought the building of the trade school and made it largely available to the school. However, the basement rooms of the building were still used by the Heimatverein. Drawing rooms and science rooms were set up on the upper floors.

During the Second World War , the school had to make the newly built gym and three classrooms available to the Wehrmacht . The high school graduates were drafted as soldiers, the boys trained for over sixteen years as air force helpers and deployed on the outskirts. In 1944 the majority of the student body was evacuated in the course of the deportation to Kinderland u. a. after Sprendlingen. In several bombings of Rüsselsheim, the school was also affected. On August 12, 1944, the roof was damaged and several doors and windows were destroyed.

On August 31, 1945, the American occupation forces appointed the previous teacher, Dr. Walter Brauer due to his age as the new (provisional) headmaster instead of the previous Dr. Helmut Heiland a. Dr. Brauer prepared to reopen the school, which took place on November 5, 1945. The first post-war years were marked by great social and economic hardship, as the most essential materials were missing (tables, chairs, coal for heating, etc.).

In 1946/47 the school was named "Realgymnasium". In 1949 the previous acting headmaster Dr. Julius Simon as headmaster.

In 1949/50 the student co-administration was founded, which in 1953 gave itself a “constitution” and in 1954 changed its name to “student co-responsibility”. In order to cope with the lack of space caused by the large number of refugee and displaced children, in 1953/54 “the separate buildings of the former commercial and secondary school were connected by an intermediate building”.

In 1954 the first issue of the long-standing school newspaper "Rüssel" appeared, which existed until the 1970s when it was replaced by "Ikarus", which in turn ceased to appear in the 1980s.

On April 1, 1956, the school was named "Immanuel Kant School".

Location until 1969 at Schulstrasse 2

In 1967, due to the increased number of pupils, the city's magistrate decided to make a new building available for the school on what was then the outskirts. The move to the new, modern building took place mostly in 1969 and dragged on for months. In the same year the long-time headmaster, Dr. Julius Simon, retired. He was followed by Werner Keil, who held the office until 1989.

In 1970 the Hessian Ministry of Culture approved the application of the college for the establishment of a "school sports center" at the IKS. This meant an increased cooperation with the other schools in Rüsselsheim for the purpose of spotting and promoting talent. In the upper school there was the possibility of a performance subject in sport.

In 1973, the city set up two pavilions on the school grounds to continue to accommodate the students.

In 1981 the school carried out its first project week.

In 1986 Horst Aussenhof founded the IKS Big Band as a working group. The IKS-Swing-Kids and the IKS-Junior-Swing-Kids grew out of this.

In 1989 Werner Keil retired, his successor was Günther Jacobs.

In 1990 the upper level building was completed, which eased the space shortage.

In 1991, the school became a partner school of competitive sports .

In 1994 the first edition of the school newspaper "Kant Aktuell" appeared.

In 1996 the school celebrated its 100th anniversary with a commemorative publication and a festival week.

In 1997 the school's first internet address was activated.

After Günther Jacobs retired in 2002, Franz-Peter Osterkamp became his successor. In the following year 2003, the IKS received the certificate “School with a focus on music”, whereby music became another pillar of the school alongside sport. At the same time, the school was allowed to carry the certificate “Environmental School in Europe” for two years.

In 2005 the IKS was converted to G8 together with all other Hessian schools (Abitur after 8 years). In 2013 the school community decided to return to the G9 . In 2011, extensive renovation and renovation measures were completed. In the course of this, the newly designed natural science rooms received electronic boards. In 2012 Franz-Peter Osterkamp retired. His successor was Rainer Guss.

With the MINT certificate, which was awarded to the school in 2014, the third focus was established. The certificate thus reflects the commitment of the school community in the natural sciences. The sports focus of the school was expanded in 2015 with the integrated sports class concept from grades 5 to 10 and placed on a new basis. Due to the lack of space, the city made two pavilions available to the school.

In 2016 the IKS celebrated its 120th birthday. On this occasion, the event in the first half of the year had the slogan “120 years of the IKS”. The anniversary was celebrated with several roundtables about the history of the school, a project week, a school festival and an academic celebration in the city theater . Several alumni of the school such as Walter Renneisen , Tobias Goldschmidt, Bianca Heinz and Wolfgang Schneider performed on the latter .

In 2017 the school u. a. Due to their commitment to environmental education ( school beekeeping , environmental working group, etc.) from the state of Hesse the certificate "environmental school".

Mission statement

The ICS mission statement is laid down in the “School Program” that was newly adopted in 2017. Accordingly, the school is based on the educational mandate of the State of Hesse. But she also feels obliged to the namesake Immanuel Kant and his appeal: "Act in such a way that the maxim of your will can at any time also apply as a principle of general legislation."

The mission statement of the ICS stipulates that the aim is for the students to develop into self-confident, open and critical personalities and to put themselves at the service of the community with personal satisfaction. They should also take responsibility for themselves and others, be encouraged and challenged in their professional and interdisciplinary skills according to their age, and use the wide range of opportunities offered by the ICS for individual profile development. It is also the aim of the school to prepare students for future tasks by taking part in school offers to prepare them for study and work.

According to the mission statement, the school offers classroom and extracurricular opportunities to discover, try out and experience. To this end, it uses its collaborations with partners from research, science and industry. The school is also about organizing the work with the students in such a way that they enjoy going to school and building a long-term relationship with it.

The whole school community is guided by the school's own system of values in order to ensure a beneficial learning atmosphere.

Focus

Sports

Large hall in the large sports hall during the open day 2018

The IKS is a school with a focus on sports. She has been participating in the state program "Talent Search - Talent Promotion" since 1991. As part of this program, the sports volleyball , hockey and judo are particularly encouraged. In this way, in cooperation with the school and sports associations / sports clubs, entry into competitive sports training for schoolchildren should be designed in a humane and educationally responsible manner. Three so-called teacher-trainer positions ensure the design of the state program in the spirit of competitive sports-oriented students. Since the school year 2008/09, sports classes have been offered, since the school year 2016/2017 continuous competitive sports promotion up to the Abitur, not least through the offer of the sports subject in the upper school level. The sporting promotion in the core sports is also reflected in the outstanding results of the IKS school teams in the school sports competition " Youth trains for the Olympics ". As a representative of Hesse, you were able to achieve many successes in various competitions.

music

Choir rehearsal in the auditorium during the Open House 2018

The IKS has been a school with a musical focus, certified by the State of Hesse, since 2003. This official recognition means the allocation of more lessons in music. In addition to the normal compulsory lessons, music classes and wind classes can be set up that have four instead of two hours of music lessons per week. The two additional hours are used to learn an instrument.

A school orchestra, several choirs and close collaboration with the Rüsselsheim Music School were established as early as the 1970s . Since then, these additional offers have been a practical addition to the regular basic and advanced music courses in the upper level. The highly regarded singing project KANTvokal , which has been established since 1999 and comprises the four ensembles Immanuel Kant Choir, Cantilena, Herrensalon and Swingles , was highlighted in 2012 at a gala concert in the Wiesbaden Kurhaus in the presence of the then Hessian Minister of Culture Nicola Beer as a model that was recognized throughout the country. The model is now being implemented in a very similar way at various German schools with a musical focus. It is aimed at a broad base of schoolchildren and encourages special commitment in appropriate and vocal performance ensembles.

Thanks to the pedagogical rigor of the project, children with a foreign language family background and native speakers without adequate family guidance - protected by the choir community - can improve their language skills enormously. In addition to musical and vocal training, presentation training (posture, walking, standing, language, facial expressions, gestures) plays an important role.

The educational purpose of the KANTvokal project is to impart social skills to the students outside of class . You can benefit from this training in presentations, in application situations and - above all - by being more confident and self-disciplined within a group.

The Swing Kids and the alumni of the IKS Big Band have won several jazz prizes over the past 30 years and thus national and international attention. The IKS is now very well positioned with many dedicated music teachers. With the current ensembles, such as the KANTvokal choir project, which is unique in Hesse, consisting of the four singing ensembles Immanuel Kant Choir, Cantilena, Herrensalon and Swingles, as well as the Musical-AG, the Junior Orchestra, the Young Philharmonic Rüsselsheim, the Junior Swing Kids and the Swing Kids, the school is musically active in a variety of ways. Every year, a wind or music class is set up alternately for grades 5 and 6, in which the children are trained in active music-making and become the next generation of the orchestra and big bands.

In recent years, the school has received praise for its musical productions, which were performed under extremely professional conditions. For example, in 2015 “ The Little Horror Shop ” was shown; for March 2020 four shows of the musical " Bonnie and Clyde " are planned. All musicals were created with the great cooperation of the students and some teachers.

MINT

Biology room during the Open House 2018

The IKS has had the "MINT-friendly school" award since autumn 2014. The certificate attests to a far above-average commitment in the field of MINT subjects. This applies to the high quality of the teaching in the modernly equipped subject rooms, to the diverse range of working groups and the numerous collaborations with partners outside of school, such as B. the model project of the " Junior Engineer Academy " in computer science. In the lower level, the students are supported and promoted according to their level of learning through remedial and advanced courses held by teachers. The very good equipment of the specialist rooms enables a large number of experiments to be carried out in physics, chemistry and biology classes. In addition, extracurricular learning locations are used, such as the school garden, which since 2015 has also provided space for the care of a bee colony by the Umwelt-AG and thus forms the basis of a school beekeeping with its own honey and candle production, which is currently being established. It is thanks to the commitment of the school beekeeping that the school was awarded the "Environmental School" certificate. The computer science group offers a wide range of courses for students of all grades, in which knowledge of programming and robotics can be acquired. Both the “Junior Engineer Academy” and the “VEX” project launched in 2015 together with Adam Opel AG offer opportunities for career orientation. For study orientation, there are several collaborations with various universities within the framework of the gifted program ( XLAB of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , inventor laboratories in cooperation with the TU Darmstadt ) and the Merck company .

The number of hours in the introductory phase of the upper level in the natural sciences is increased by one hour and advanced courses in mathematics and all natural science subjects are offered continuously. Youth research projects, internships at companies in the region and participation in many competitions round off the wide range.

social learning

The IKS accompanies the students on their way to adulthood with age-appropriate and varied offers from grade 5 to the introductory phase. By conveying values that are also taken into account in the school's system of values, social interaction, empathy and self-esteem are promoted.

Protection of minors in the media

The IKS closely links activities in the field of youth media protection with the concept of social learning. Media education and the protection of minors in the media always also mean values education. Another focus is educating students about problematic online content and the consequences of excessive media consumption. In years five to seven, the class teachers have lessons on the subjects of “WhatsApp”, “Cyberbullying” and “Internet security”.

School pastoral care

The IKS has half a school chaplaincy position. The school pastoral care advises students in cases such as school stress, family problems or other concerns. School pastoral care is open to everyone - regardless of religion or denomination. The interviews are voluntary and confidential. During the school year, the school chaplain and other religion teachers offer a variety of things: a school enrollment service, devotions, reflection during Advent, offers to recharge your batteries and find peace.

The transition from elementary school to high school

The transition from primary school to high school is a challenge for many children and their parents with many unknowns. The ICS tries to make this transition as smooth as possible. The new "Kantians" should feel welcome and quickly get used to the IKS. A variety of measures are offered to ensure that the transition is successful for the students:

  • At the end of November there will be an open day at the IKS, where interested children and their parents can find out more about the wide range of services offered by the IKS
  • At the parents' information evening at the end of January, the headmaster will once again present the school concept in detail. Together with the various teachers from the different areas of focus and educational concepts of the school, detailed questions can be discussed again here
  • For children who are interested in the school's sports class concept, there is a trial training session in December, during which further information on the sports focus is provided.
  • In autumn there will be a meeting of 5th grade teachers with primary school teachers for the purpose of exchanging ideas about the new 5th graders.
  • In spring there is an information evening for the parents of the new fifth graders in the profile classes (music and sport).

School profile and facilities

Entrance room of the student library

The Immanuel Kant School is an all-day school (profile 1). In accordance with the special requirements for all-day care, a cafeteria and a cafeteria were set up, and a school library and group rooms were also newly built. Homework supervision is offered for the younger generation. Those who have major problems in major subjects can take advantage of the support courses. There is spelling and maths support, support for English, Latin and French and German for migrants.

IKS students can document their foreign language skills with language diplomas (Cambridge Certificate, DELF language diplomas). The acquisition of foreign languages is promoted through projects as well as cross-lingual and cross-language teaching sequences in specialist lessons and school life. Activities such as exchanges, excursions or competitions round off the offer.

The elective teaching concept of the IKS offers the students in grades 9 and 10 the opportunity to deepen and expand their knowledge and inclinations both in the areas of the school's main focus and beyond.

Support association

The friends and sponsors of the Immanuel-Kant-Schule eV association was founded in 1986 and currently has around 280 members. The aim of the association is to support the school financially in its educational tasks, to enable the acquisition of additional teaching and learning materials as well as equipment, to maintain traditions at the Immanuel Kant school, for example. B. To ensure alumni meetings, to run a social fund, to support the library, to run the school bistro and to provide homework supervision.

Student Council

The IKS student council (SV) has existed since the early 1950s. She takes care of the needs of the students and represents them in front of the teaching staff. The entire SV meets regularly in its own SV room. Problems are discussed there, dates are announced and new projects are tackled.

Homework assistance

The IKS offers its students the opportunity to do their homework under supervision in the homework supervisor. As far as possible, the homework should be done independently. If the homework is "premature", i. H. should be done before the end of the supervision period, the students can, by arrangement, deal with additional tasks, read books from the student library, draw or play.

Working groups (AGs)

The Immanuel Kant School has many different, well-frequented study groups as offers for the students. Since the IKS focuses on music, there are particularly many offers in this area. The best-known music groups are the "Kant Choir", which is made up mostly of middle school students, the "Junior Swing Kids", which represent the young band of the renowned "IKS Big Band" and the "IKS Swing Kids", and the " Swingles ”and the“ men's salon ”.

The Immanuel Kant School also has a wide range of offers for students in the field of sports. In cooperation with the Rüsselsheim RK we offer "rowing" as an AG. There is also a climbing club and talent development groups in volleyball , judo and hockey .

The Immanuel Kant School also has a special focus on computer science and robotics . From the fifth grade up to the Abitur, students can learn everything from basic computer science to programming apps , programs and robots.

Career and study orientation

The career and study orientation at the IKS prepares the learners for their career choice in an interdisciplinary manner. The pupils are given comprehensive information about the various training options, the course and the dual course of study. At the end of their school career, they should be able to make a career or study choice that corresponds to their skills.

Many different measures interlock to make this possible: On Girls '& Boys' Day and the two company internships in the ninth year and in the introductory phase (2nd half of the year) our students get an insight into professional life. The career choice pass is handed out in the eighth year so that the learners can adequately document their career and study orientation process. They create a comprehensive portfolio during their school career. With the help of the Rüsselsheim Economic Development Agency, companies are invited to the school for the "Azubitalk", the career information evening of the Rotary Club, which provides information about the various training opportunities in their companies, the dual study program and courses. The apprentices visit the university and career orientation fair hobit in Darmstadt and can watch the “open day” at the universities in the area. The geva test, an inclination determination procedure, the career choice consultation, application training and a parents' evening form further building blocks in the career and study orientation. A BSO team consisting of teachers organizes and informs the school community about the vocational and study-oriented measures at the school.

social commitment

The IKS school community regularly carries out social projects and campaigns for people in need. The proceeds from the annual Santa Claus campaign and the Advent concert benefit children in the village of Naranjal in Peru . Students also run fundraisers and the like. a. for the Bärenherz children's hospice in Wiesbaden and other social projects.
