School beekeeping

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A school beekeeping is a functioning beekeeping permanently installed in a school , which is operated with the help of or exclusively by pupils.

In Germany, as with other beekeepers, school beekeeping requires registration with the veterinary office of the respective location. So far there are over 150 school beekeeping in Germany. Sustainable school beekeeping is funded by the German Federal Environment Foundation.

Implementation in schools

The school Beekeeping is either fixed in teaching ( social studies / biology classes involved or) part of the afternoon offered in the respective schools. In a few schools, beekeeping is compulsory as part of the compulsory elective lessons , and grades are also awarded. The choice of the teaching model is up to the respective school and the supervising teachers or beekeepers. If school beekeeping is taught in compulsory subjects, a curriculum is required from the school authority in which the learning objectives and specialist skills are specified.

Since the school beekeeping usually does not cover costs and the deficits have to be financially borne by the schools, sponsors and donors are usually required in order to be able to bear the running costs. In order to be able to issue the required donation receipts , the school beekeeping needs a business model, for example a non-profit association can be founded. In Bavaria, the Ministry of Agriculture awards grants of 300 euros per school year to groups who take the beekeeping optional course in a school.

In addition, the school beekeeping operator has to deal with the problem of bee venom allergies . Usually a signature from the parents of the pupil concerned is sufficient to ensure that the child is not known to be allergic to bee venom. In the compulsory elective area, it can be pointed out when choosing a course that the course may not be chosen by pupils allergic to bee venom.

School beekeeping projects

As part of the Jugend forscht 2014 competition, the school beekeeping at the Otto Hahn School in Hamburg-Jenfeld is investigating under which conditions book scorpions can best be established in beehives. There they are supposed to help fight the varroa mite . The students are guided by the school's biology teacher.
