Elmar Brähler (born March 3, 1946 in Fulda ) was Professor of Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology at the University of Leipzig .

Life

After graduating from the humanistic cathedral grammar school in Fulda , Brähler studied mathematics and physics in Giessen from 1965 to 1970 . From 1969 to 1994 he worked in Giessen as a research assistant / research assistant / academic councilor or academic senior councilor at the Center for Psychosomatic Medicine (Director: Horst-Eberhard Richter ) in the Medical Psychology Department (Head: Dieter Beckmann ). In 1976 he was promoted to Dr. rer. biol. hum. doctorate, 1980 followed the habilitation. In 1985 he was made an honorary professor.

From 1994 to 2013 Brähler was head of the Department of Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology at the University of Leipzig . From 2002 to 2005 and 2008 to 2010 he was Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig. Since 2013 he has been a visiting scientist at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Mainz University Medical Center . There he heads the BMBF joint project "GDR Past and Mental Health: Risk and Protection Factors".

He oversees the Mitte studies (studies on right-wing extremism).

Services

Elmar Brähler research focuses on psychodiagnostics , the psychological aspects of fertility disorders, the processing of chronic diseases, the gender-specific aspects of health and illness, medical and ethical questions in reproductive medicine , unemployment and health and right-wing extremist attitudes in Germany.

Elmar Brähler is a member of the Willy Brandt Circle and a scientific advisory board of the German Society for Psychosomatic Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGPFG) and the Sigmund Freud Institute (Frankfurt / Main). He was a member of the University Council of the University of Leipzig (2010-2015), member of the Council for Social and Economic Data (2011-2014), Collegiate of the DFG for the Department of Clinical, and Social Psychology, Medical Psychology (2004-2012), Chairman of the German Society for Medical Psychology (1994–2000) and Medical and Scientific Director of the Department of Mental Health at Leipzig University Hospital.

Fonts

Brähler is the editor of a number of book series and member of the advisory board of various specialist journals (e.g. from Psychotherapie Psychosomatik Medical Psychologie ). He published articles in scientific journals, numerous psychological test procedures (e.g. questionnaires on life satisfaction or the Giessen test ) and more than 80 books.
