Kirello VI ( Cyril VI ; * August 12, 1902 in Damanhur , Egypt as Azar Yussef Atta ; † March 9, 1971 ) was the 116th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark ( Coptic Church ).

Life

On July 27, 1927, he entered the Baramous Monastery , where he was named Mina Al Baramousy in 1928 when he was ordained a monk . He was ordained as a monk priest on July 18, 1931. In 1932 he became a hermit and migrated from the monastery to the cave of Amba Sarabamon , where Pope Yoannis XIX. Visited in 1934.

In 1936 he left his hermit cave and went to Old Cairo near the Mokadamm mountains and rented the so-called mill there. From 1942 he served in the Aba Kir and Johannes church. In 1944 he was called to the Anba Samuel Monastery to restructure it. On his initiative and with his help, the Church of St. Mina was built in Old Cairo in 1947 .

On May 10, 1959, the monk's father Mina was named Kirellos VI. the patriarch consecrated of Alexandria. In 1959 he consecrated a patriarch of Ethiopia . He visited Ethiopia twice, in 1960 and 1965 . In 1965 he laid the foundation stone for the great St. Mark's Cathedral in Cairo. When it opened in 1968, the relic of St. Mark the Evangelist was brought back to Egypt from Italy on his initiative . He had the St. Mina monastery rebuilt. He carried out a program of visits to various villages and dioceses, where he was received with great enthusiasm and interest by numerous residents. He initiated a revival movement in the Coptic Orthodox Church. He supported many modern developments in the Church. In his personal life, he followed a harsh ascetic discipline consisting of vigilance, fasting and prayer.

During his term of office, Zeitoun's alleged apparition of Mary in 1968, which he publicly declared to be credible, also fell.

Kirello VI died on Tuesday, March 9, 1971 at the age of 69 after 11 years and 9 months as a Patriarch. First he was buried in the new cathedral in Cairo. On November 25, 1972, his body was transferred to the St. Mina Monastery , as requested by him during his lifetime .
