Juniperus carinata is a species of plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to China and is considered a variety of Juniperus pingii by some authors.

description

Juniperus carinata grows as an evergreen , prostrate or upright shrub or, rarely, as a small tree that can reach heights of up to 4 meters. The depressed branches have strong, non-drooping branches with a square cross-section. The light brown to purple bark flakes off in thin strips.

The scale-like needles are 4 to 7 millimeters long and go straight or slightly curved from the branches. They are mostly keeled and have a pointed tip.

Juniperus carinata is dioecious-separate sexes ( diocesan ). The flowering period extends from May to June and the cones ripen after two years. The berry-shaped cones are egg-shaped to spherical with a size of 7 to 9 millimeters. When ripe, they are colored glossy black. Each of the cones bears a seed. The seeds have clearly recognizable resin pits and are egg-shaped to almost spherical with a length of 5 to 7 millimeters. Its base is rounded and its tip is blunt.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus carinata is in China. It includes the provinces of South Gansu , South Shaanxi , Sichuan , Xizang and Yunnan .

Juniperus carinata thrives at altitudes of 2700 to 4500 meters. The species is found mainly in rocky areas near the tree line, where it grows mainly in mountain forests and thickets.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus pingii var. Carinata in 1998 by Yong Fu Yu and Fu Liguo in Novon 7 , p. 433. In 2000, Robert Philip Adams raised it to species status in Biochemical Systematics and Ecology 28 , p. 541. It is still considered by some authors as a variety Juniperus pingii var. Wilsonii (Rehder) Silba of Juniperus pingii .
