Juniperus Pingii is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to China.

description

Juniperus pingii grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of 4 to 30 meters. The shrub shape grows prostrate or upright. The slender to strong branches can, but do not have to be, drooping.

The blue-green leaves are needle-like with a length of 2 to 7 millimeters and a width of 1 to 1.5 millimeters. They are straight to strongly curved inwards. On the upper side of the leaf there is a pale green leaf vein and the underside of the leaf is keeled. The base of the leaf is sloping and the tip is pointed. The leaves are in three whorls on the branches.

Juniperus pingii is monoecious-segregated ( monoecious ). The male cones are egg-shaped to spherical with a thickness of 3 to 4 millimeters and stand together in whorls. They contain six to nine microsporophylls with two to three pollen sacs . The female berry cones are egg-shaped to almost spherical with a thickness of 7 to 9 millimeters. When ripe they are colored glossy black. Each of the berry cones carries a seed. With a length of 5 to 7 millimeters, these are egg-shaped to almost spherical in shape and have noticeable resin pits. The base of the seeds is rounded and their tip is blunt.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus pingii is in China. It includes South Gansu , Northwest Hubei , South Qinghai , South Shaanxi , Sichuan , Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region .

The species thrives at altitudes of 2600 to 4900 meters. It is mainly found on mountain slopes where it grows in thickets and forests.

use

The species is occasionally planted as an ornamental wood.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus pingii by Wan Chun Cheng in 1944 in Bulletin de la Société d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse , Volume 79, Page 76. A synonym for Juniperus pingii W.C. Cheng ex Ferré is Sabina pingii (WC Cheng ex Ferré) WC Cheng & WT Wang .

The species is divided into up to four varieties :

  • Juniperus pingii var. Carinata Y.F. Yu & LK Fu grows as a prostrate or upright shrub up to 4 meters high. It is native to southern Gansu , southern Shaanxi , Sichuan, Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region. The variety is considered by some authors as an independent species Juniperus carinata (YFYu & LKFu) RPAdams . According to WCSP, this variety is a synonym of Juniperus pingii var. Wilsonii .
  • Juniperus pingii var. Miehei Farjon is native to the southern Tibetan Autonomous Region.
  • Juniperus Pingii . Var pingii (Syn .: Juniperus Pingii var. Chengii (LKFu & YFYu) Farjon ): She is the nominate form . It grows as a tree up to 30 meters high and occurs from southeastern Tibet to southwestern Sichuan and northwestern Yunnan.
  • Juniperus pingii var. Wilsonii (Rehder) Silba grows as a prostrate or upright shrub up to 6 meters high. It is native to South Gansu, Northwest Hubei, South Qinghai, South Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, and the Tibet Autonomous Region. A synonym is Sabina wilsonii (Rehder) WC Cheng & LK Fu .

Hazard and protection

Juniperus pingii is classified as "low endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary. Forest felling is stated as the main reason for danger.
