Live and act

Arnie Carruthers grew up in Kalispell in the northwest of the US state Montana . He started playing the piano at the age of three; at the age of 13 he performed Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue . After graduating from the University of Montana in 1955 , he moved to Spokane, Washington state, in 1957. There he played at the Davenport Hotel and in local nightclubs, as well as appearing at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle and the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles . In 1974 he suffered a stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body. He then trained one-handed piano playing, studied at Eastern Washington University and earned a degree in music theory .

He was considered a respected musicians' musician in the Spokane music scene , has appeared with guest musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie , Joe Venuti and Barney Kessel and has released several albums over the course of his career, a duo album with pianist Joe Kloess, the live album In Commemoration of the Helena Jazz Fest '84 (Zoom) and I'm Still Swingin , which was released in 1999 on the MNOP label. Carruthers died at the age of 81 after a long-standing bladder cancer illness.

According to Gary Giddins , Carruthers developed a multitude of voicings with his right hand and such an enormous speed that it allowed him the agility to create the illusion of a large attack and allowed him an impressive interplay of single notes and chords, no less engaging when played by two hands.
