Michael Schumacher (* 1961 in Spokane , Washington ) is an American choreographer, ballet dancer and teacher.

Life

Schumacher grew up in Lewiston , Idaho , and began his career as a dancer there. At the Juilliard School , he completed a dance degree with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . He later went to Europe and settled in Amsterdam . As a dancer, he has been a member of several major groups, including The Forsythe Company , Twyla Tharp Dance , Feld Ballet , Pretty Ugly Dance Company and Magpie Music Dance Company . He has played roles in several productions by Peter Sellars , including in Bijbelse Stukken , Peony Pavilion , El Niño , Bach Cantatas and La Passion de Simone . He has also appeared in choreographies by Cora Bos-Kroese , Dana Caspersen , Anouk van Dijk , Mark Haim , Chico Katsube , Ruth Meyer and Paul Selwyn Norton .

Schumacher worked twice as a choreographer for the Forsyte Company, first with Splendor Shed (1990), then with Blender Head (1994). He also created choreographies for the Netherlands Dance Theater III , The Dutch National Ballet and Dansgroep Amsterdam . In collaboration with his brother Steven , Unwrapped was created in 1995 , in collaboration with Daniela Graça , Marcelo Evelin and Anat Geiger ANDAMAMI (2000) and Glashuis (2001). Since the late 1990s, his choreographies have appeared regularly at the Holland Dance Festival .

As an improviser, Schumacher worked several times with the cellist and composer Alex Waterman : Heaven Is A Radio (2003 at the Frascati Theater in Amsterdam) Dans le Jardin (2004 at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon and 2006 at the STEPS Festival in Switzerland ) and Six Suites (2005 at the Holland Dance Festival in The Hague ). In 2008 Schumacher was awarded the Gouden Zwaan and the Jiri-Kylián-Ring .
