Alex Waterman

Alex Waterman (* 1975 in Portsmouth / Virginia ) is an American cellist and composer.

Waterman took private cello lessons from George Neikrug (1995) and Frances-Marie Uitti (1996–97). From 1998 he studied cello with Andor Toth and Catherina Meints and composition with Randolph Coleman at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music , then composition with Richard Barrett and Konrad Boehmer and electroacoustic music with Paul Berg , Kees Tazelaar , and Joel Ryan at the De Haag Conservatory . He also attended master classes by Yo-Yo Ma , Anner Bylsma , Eugene Lehner , Felix Galimir , Rostislav Dubinsky and Louis Andriessen .

Waterman is a founding member of the Brussels and London based Plus Minus Ensemble , which specializes in contemporary and experimental music. As an improvisation musician he worked a. a. with the Ig Henneman Quartet , the Maartje ten Hoorn Quartet , the Magpie Music and Dance Company and the Trio Céline (with Eric Thielemans and Jean Yves Evrard ). With Yves de Mey he appears as the duo Eavesdropper and Waterman . As a member of Ghalia Benali's group , he also plays modern and traditional Arabic music.

In addition, he composed the music for several dance productions, including a. des Nederland Dans Theater III ("Tanz in August", 2002), by Michael Schumacher ("Heaven is a Radio", 2002), Masako Noguchi ("Knock", 2001), Katie Duck ("Love Poems" and "The Kitchen New York "") and Steve Paxton (at the Kaai Theater Improv Festival 2001). He performed projects with Schumacher in Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Monaco and in 2008 in New York.

Waterman also worked with Robert Ashley , Helmut Lachenmann , Keith Rowe , Marina Rosenfeld , Anthony Coleman , Elliott Sharp , Ned Rothenberg , Gerry Hemingway , David Watson , Chris Mann , Alison Knowles , Thomas Meadowcroft and Michael Finnissy . Currently (2018) he belongs to the improvisation ensemble We Free Strings around Melanie Dyer .
