Chris Mann

Chris Mann (born 1949 in Melbourne ; † September 12, 2018 in New York City ) was an Australian poet, composer and performer.

biography

The son of Jewish refugees from Germany studied Sinology and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne until 1969 . In 1977 he was the coordinator of a UNESCO project on the acoustic grammar of natural languages. Since the 1980s he lived in New York.

Mann, who described himself as a "compositional linguist", published poetic and sound poetic works as well as experimental compositions. He was best known as an interpreter of sound poetic works as a soloist or in collaboration with artists such as Tom Buckner, John Cage , David Dunn , Gary Hill , Johnny Klimek , Annea Lockwood , Larry Polansky and the groups Machine for Making Sense and The Impediments , where he was known - often humorously - was particularly interested in spoken Australian English including slang.

His performances have been broadcast by broadcasters such as the BBC London, the SFB and the ORF. He has appeared at numerous festivals, such as the Paris Autumn Festival (1983), the Anzart Festival (Hobart, 1983), Ars Electronica (Linz, 1989), the Festival de la Bâtie (Geneva, 1989, 1997), Sprach Ton Art (Berlin, 1989), the Brisbane Biennial (1990), the V2 Festival (Rotterdam, 1991), the Urban Aboriginal Festival (Berlin, 1993), the Taklos Festival (Geneva, 1994), the International Festival of Sound Poetry (Berlin, 1996 ), the Experimenta (Buenos Aires, 1999) and the Adelaide Festival (Adelaide, 2000).
