Anne Perry (* 28. October 1938 in Blackheath , London as Juliet Marion Hulme ) is a British writer . She is known for her historical crime novels set in Victorian England.

Anne Perry was born as Juliet Hulme. She was the firstborn child of the English physicist Henry Rainsford Hulme (1908-1991) and his wife Hilda Marion Reavley (* 1912), daughter of a respected Anglican clergyman. Her younger brother Jonathan was born in 1944. At the age of 6, she developed tuberculosis and had to move to a warmer climate. Her parents sent her to a foster family in the Bahamas , with whom she later moved to a remote island in New Zealand . As a result, she missed school for almost three years. Her father accepted a position as principal of the University of Canterbury , New Zealand, and Perry was able to live with her family again.

When she was 15, her parents were on the verge of divorce. Perry hoped to be able to accompany her father back to England with her friend Pauline Parker after the divorce . The two girls were very close friends. Perry admitted in a 2006 interview that the relationship was obsessive . Parker's mother, Honora Parker, disapproved of the close bond. Her daughter feared she would prevent her from leaving New Zealand with Perry. Pauline Parker drafted a murder plan in her diary, which she shared with Perry and which the two girls carried out on June 22, 1954. They lured Honora Parker into a park and killed her with a brick wrapped in a stocking. The murder case caused quite a stir. Due to their young age, they escaped the death penalty and were sentenced to an indefinite term known in Commonwealth as At Her Majesty's Pleasure . After five years in prison, they were released on condition that they never contact each other again.

The story was filmed in 1994 by Peter Jackson under the title Heavenly Creatures and starred with later Oscar winner Kate Winslet for the role of Juliet Hulme.

In August 2009, the premiere of the documentary Anne Perry - Interiors (director: Dana Linkiewicz) took place at the Montréal World Film Festival .

Career as a writer

After her release in 1959, Perry returned to England. Her mother remarried, and Perry took her stepfather's name. Anne Perry is not a pseudonym but has been her correct real name ever since. She kept her head above water with many different jobs. She lived in Southern California for five years, during which time she joined the Mormons of which she is still a member today.

She began to write in the 1960s, but after many rejections she did not publish her first novel until 1979. In her novels she mostly uses Victorian England ( Victorian Age ) as a historical background; The inspiration for this came from her stepfather, who speculated who Jack the Ripper might have been. That was the hour of birth of its main characters, the police officer Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte, who lived in London at the time of the Jack the Ripper murders. She later invented the private detective William Monk, who, in contrast to the Pitts, is a rather dark character.

Her books have been sold 20 million times worldwide (as of 2006).

Anne Perry now lives in the small village of Portmahomack in Scotland .
