Ruth Rendell

Ruth Rendell (2007)

Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh CBE (born February 17, 1930 in South Woodford , London , † May 2, 2015 in London), who also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Vine , was a British bestselling author. She was best known for both her detective and psychological novels; she wrote thrillers as Barbara Vine and detective novels as Ruth Rendell.

Her works are characterized by their elegant prose and, like Rendell himself, have repeatedly received prestigious literary prizes. The British newspaper The Guardian included no fewer than five of its novels and thrillers in its list of 1000 novels everyone should read in 2009.

Life

Ruth Rendell was born Ruth Barbara Grasemann in London in 1930. Her parents were both teachers. Her mother, Ebbe Elise, was Swedish but grew up in Denmark. Her father Arthur, on the other hand, was English. Due to the very limited financial circumstances of his family, Arthur Grasemann left school at the age of 14 and completed an apprenticeship in a shipyard. However, he could not find a job afterwards, continued his education and eventually became a teacher of mathematics and science. Rendell was the couple's only child. Her mother contracted multiple sclerosis shortly after the birth of her daughter .

Rendell grew up in South Woodford on the northeastern outskirts of London. She went to school in Loughton, Essex and then worked for some time as a journalist for her local newspaper, the Chigwell Times , and from 1948 for the Essex Express and Independent . While working for this newspaper, she met Donald Rendell, who was also working as a journalist for this paper at the time. They married, and after the birth of their only son, Rendell was a housewife for ten years. In parallel with her housework, she began to write in various literary genres. However, neither her first novels nor her short stories found a publisher. Rendell began working on a detective novel in the early 1960s because, in their opinion, a novel of this literary genre offered the greatest chance of being published. Rendell herself was not particularly interested in detective novels, even if she thought she remembered reading Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers , two of the more important representatives of the so-called Golden Age of the Whodunnit , as girls . An editor at Hutchinson Verlag whom her husband knew took on the novel. From Doon With Death (dt. Lots of love from death ), Rendell's first detective story to detectives Inspector Reginald Wexford, appeared in 1964. Rendell received for the novel £ 75.

Wexford became the protagonist of a whole series that grew to 24 novels by 2014 and made Rendell one of the most successful writers in Great Britain. Until 2014 she wrote another 28 detective novels without the protagonist Wexford and since 1986 she has also written a number of psychological thrillers as Barbara Vine , a pseudonym made up of her middle name and the maiden name of her grandmother. The choice of an additional pseudonym was never intended to conceal the true identity of the author, but was widely published. It should be a guide to the reader as to which form of novel to expect. The novels written under the pseudonym Vine show only marginal elements of a detective novel. Mostly they grapple with the fact that past events have far-reaching effects on the novel's protagonists. In contrast to the novels and short stories published under the name of Ruth Rendell, Rendell was able to dispense with elements typical of detective novels such as clues, forensics, witness interviews and occasionally even completely without the description of a police investigation.

Rendell consistently shielded her private life from the public. It is known that she divorced her husband in 1975. However, the two remarried years later. Rendell's son now lives with his family in the United States, where he works as a psychotherapist . The Rendell couple lived in rural Suffolk for a long time. Rendell moved 18 times in her life. Most recently Ruth Rendell lived and worked in London again. Like her friend PD James , who died in 2014 , Rendell has been a member of the House of Lords since she was raised to the nobility in 2007 . Unlike PD James, Rendell represented Labor Party positions there . Rendell was always interested in social issues - this is also evidenced by her more recent novels. Simisola (German The Visitor , published 1994), Road Rage (German Who sows Discord , published 1997) and Harm done (German Das Verderben , published 1999) deal with the social consequences of racism, environmental pollution and domestic issues, among other things Violence apart.

Working method

According to his own admission, Rendell was fascinated by the chain of events that turn an actually banal occurrence into something with unexpected consequences. In a 1983 interview with U.S. publisher John C. Carr, Ruth Rendell said:

“I collect coincidences in people's lives. Yes, actually, I like to write about coincidence, the kind of coincidence that makes you turn left instead of right and how it changes the way things go. "

Rendell often reveals the act and perpetrators at the beginning of a novel. So her novel begins A Judgment in Stone (dt. Judgment in Stone , 1977) with the words:

"Eunice Parchman murdered the Coverdale family because they could not read or write."

Based on this sentence, Rendell describes the chain of coincidences and misunderstandings that led to the fact that four people were murdered while listening to a radio broadcast of an opera performance. However, it is also typical of Rendell's crime novels that the perpetrators are subjected to some form of punishment.

Rendell is known for her elegant and polished prose and her astute observation of human behavior. Together with PD James , she is considered to be one of the most important representatives of psychological crime novels in England, which no longer focuses on the search for the perpetrator as in classic crime novels, but rather deals with the circumstances and motives of crimes. Many of Ruth Rendell's novels have been made into films, including a television series starring Inspector Wexford.
