James Patterson

James Brendan Patterson (born March 22, 1947 in Newburgh , Orange County , New York) is an American author. His crime novels have sold over 100 million copies.

life and work

Patterson grew up in New York State and studied English literature at Vanderbilt University in Nashville . In 1971 he started working as a copywriter for the international advertising agency J. Walter Thompson and quickly became head of the advertising department. At the same time he began writing detective novels and in 1976, after initial difficulties in finding a publisher, his first novel The Dead Know Nothing was published . After several individual novels, he began his hit series in 1992 around Alex Cross, a Washington police psychologist. Since 1996 he has devoted himself more to writing and in 2001 the series with Lindsay Boxer, an inspector in San Francisco, followed. Since 2006 he has been writing the series "Maximum Ride" based on motifs from his earlier novel The Day on which the Wind Carries You .

James Patterson is now one of the international bestselling authors. His books have sold over 100 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages. DER SPIEGEL describes him as the "most successful writer in the world" and emphasizes that Patterson sold "more books than Dan Brown , John Grisham and Stephen King combined" in 2010 . The first two Alex Cross novels were filmed: 1997 came about ... because they are there to be kissed , followed by Im Netz der Spinne from 2001. Morgan Freeman plays the role of Alex Cross in both films . The film Alex Cross , shot in 2012, is based on the twelfth volume Blood and Tyler Perry can be seen in the title role.

The first Lindsay Boxer novel ( The First Murder ) was filmed for the US television station NBC under the title First To Die with Pam Grier and Sean Young .

Patterson writes his novels with the help of currently seven co-authors. He writes a novel himself, which is then developed by others. It takes around nine drafts to complete a novel, and it takes an average of one year. Together with former American President Bill Clinton , he wrote the political thriller The President Is Missing , published in 2018 .

James Patterson lives in Palm Beach , Florida with his wife Susan and son Jack .
