JWT (until February 2005 J. Walter Thompson ) is an international advertising agency with headquarters in New York . The agency was founded by James Walter Thompson in 1864 and claims to be the oldest advertising agency in the world. The agency's parent company is WPP , based in London .

The company operates a worldwide agency network with 10,000 employees in more than 200 offices in over 90 countries.

Company history

J. Walter Thompson is known internally as the " Commodore " because he was an enthusiastic sailor.

In 1864, in the middle of the American Civil War, William James Carlton began selling advertising space in religious magazines in New York. Business was doing well and he was soon able to hire young James Walter Thompson to do the bookkeeping. Thompson persuaded Carlton to expand the business to other publications.

In 1877 Carlton sold the company to his employee Thompson for $ 500.

In 1878, Thompson gave the company its own name. In an anecdote it says: Actually, he wanted to name the agency James W. Thompson. But when he discovered that a number of gentlemen were already doing business in New York with this name, he changed the spelling to “J. Walter Thompson ”.

Over the next 38 years, Thompson created the first international agency chain and a number of standard works on advertising and brands.

JWT has been part of the WPP Group (Wire and Plastic Products) since 1987, one of the world's largest communication holding companies.
