The WPP plc is a British company from advertising services and media company . With sales of $ 16 billion in 2011, WPP Group was the world's largest advertising holding company, ahead of Omnicom and Publicis . Other important competitors are IPG , Dentsū , Havas and Hakuhodo .

The group is listed on the London Stock Exchange in the FTSE 100 Index . The group's headquarters are in London , England ; it is also registered in Dublin , Ireland . The WPP Group is one of the largest global media and communications companies with around 203,000 employees in over 3,000 offices in 112 countries (2017).

history

The company was founded in 1971 as Wire and Plastic Products plc as a manufacturer of shopping baskets.

In 1985 Martin Sorrell acquired Wire and Plastic Products Plc, which at the time consisted of a single office with two employees and had a market capitalization of £ 1 million.

Sorrell formed the WPP group from this listed company. Through numerous mergers and acquisitions, he transformed the company into one of the world's largest media companies. The most important acquisitions included those of the J. Walter Thompson Group (JWT) for $ 566 million (1987) and the Ogilvy Group for $ 864 million (1989) as well as those of Young & Rubicam (2000) .

In 2001 Icon Brand Navigation was taken over.

In July 2008, the WPP Group attempted to take over the market research company Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS). The takeover was successfully completed in October 2008.

At the end of 2010, the group took over the US agency Blue State Digital, which developed the successful Internet election campaign for Barack Obama. On April 19, 2011, WPP approved the takeover of Commarco GmbH, subject to regulatory approval. Commarco GmbH claims to be the largest German holding company for communication and marketing services agencies such as B. Scholz & Friends, deepblue networks, gkk DialogGroup and Lowe Germany.

In 2012 the WPP Group took over the digital service provider AKQA for an estimated purchase price of 540 million US dollars .

After an in-house investigation initiated against CEO Martin Sorrell in April 2018 due to "misconduct", he resigned from his position after more than 30 years at the helm of the company.

Business activity

The WPP Group's advertising agency holdings include the Gray Group , Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, Young & Rubicam Brands and JWT (formerly J. Walter Thompson Co.).

WPP Group's holdings in government lobbying and public relations include Hill & Knowlton Strategies, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Burson-Marsteller and Cohn & Wolfe (the latter two are part of Young & Rubicam Brands).

The WPP media agencies Mindshare , Wavemaker (since 2018: merger of MEC (formerly Mediaedge: cia) and Maxus) and MediaCom (originally part of the Gray Group) are brought together under the umbrella of GroupM .

The WPP research and consulting companies are grouped under the umbrella of the Kantar Group and include BMRB, Added Value, Kantar Video, Indian Market Research Bureau, Millward Brown , Management Ventures Inc., Research International and TNS.

Delfinware Domestic wireware, which was founded in 1969 and produces wire racks for kitchens and bathrooms, is also a subsidiary of the WPP Group.
