Sir Martin Stuart Sorrell (born February 14, 1945 in London ) is a British entrepreneur . He founded the advertising holding company WPP , which he headed as CEO from 1986 to 2018 .

Life

Sorrell comes from a family of Jewish immigrants from what is now Ukraine and grew up in northwest London, where his father ran a few electronics stores. He attended Haberdashers 'Aske's Boys' School , where he became friends with Simon Schama . He studied at Christ's College at the University of Cambridge and at Harvard University , where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration .

He first worked at Glendinning Associates from 1968 to 1969, then from 1970 to 1974 at Mark McCormack and from 1975 to 1977 at James Gulliver Associates. From 1977 he worked for the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising agency .

In 1985 Sorrell made a private investment in the micro-company Wire and Plastic Products Plc , which had previously made shopping baskets. The company he built in the coming years, especially through numerous mergers and acquisitions for WPP Group to. From 1986 he headed the company. The largest acquisitions included the J. Walter Thompson Group (JWT) for $ 566 million (1987) and the Ogilvy Group for $ 864 million (1989), as well as those of Young & Rubicam (2000) . WPP is one of the world's largest media and communications companies with around 205,000 employees in over 3,000 offices in 112 countries (as of 2016).

Sorrell is an income and wealth millionaire . His personal wealth is estimated at around £ 495 million (as of 2017). In the run-up to the 2012 WPP annual general meeting, there was significant debate over Sorrell's annual salary of £ 13 million, during which the entrepreneur defended the salary in a guest post in the Financial Times . The shareholders finally voted against the company's salary report. The amount of Sorrell's salary continued to be debated in the following years. In 2016 this had already risen to £ 70 million.

In April 2018, WPP initiated an internal investigation into possible “personal misconduct” against Sorrell. Sorrell denied the allegations. Upon completion of the investigation, Sorrell resigned from his position.

Private life

The entrepreneur was married to Sandra Sorrell for 33 years. The marriage, which was divorced in 2005, had three sons. The divorce was reported in the international and British tabloids, not least because of the exorbitant severance payments. Since 2008 Sorrell has been married to the Italian Cristiana Falcone-Sorrell, Media & Entertainment Industries Director of the World Economic Forum .

Awards

On December 31, 1999, Sorrell was knighted a Knight Bachelor in the 2000 New Year Honors for services to the media and communications industries.
