Julian Symons

Julian Gustave Symons (born May 30, 1912 in London , † November 23, 1994 in Kent ) was a British literary critic, detective writer and bestselling author.

Life

Symons left school at the age of 14 and then carried out various simple activities, mainly manual work, until he founded the magazine Twentieth Century Verse in 1937 , which lasted until the beginning of the Second World War .

From 1942 to 1944 he did military service during the war and after his discharge from the military he worked as a copywriter in the advertising industry, but also began to write detective novels , the first of which ( The Immaterial Murder Case ) appeared in 1945 and was an immediate success . From 1947 he was able to live from his writing activity and made it his main occupation.

Between 1945 and 1994 he wrote over thirty detective novels. In addition to his crime novels and thrillers, some of which have received critical acclaim, he has also written poetry, non-fiction books (military history and others), biographies , reviews and essays . Between 1976 and 1985 he was President of the British Detection Club, succeeding Agatha Christie .

Julian Symons died in 1994.
