Chris Abani

Christopher "Chris" U. Abani (* 1966 in Afikpo , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian writer .

Life

Chris Abani was born in Afikpo, Nigeria. His father was a member of the Igbo people , his mother English. At the age of sixteen he published his first novel Masters of the Board (1985), as a result of which he was exposed to severe political persecution. His second novel GraceLand (2004; German GraceLand ) tells the story of a young Elvis actor and his struggle against the absurd imponderables of everyday life. With Kalakuta Republic (2000), Daphne's Lot (2003) and Dog Woman (2004) there are three collections of poetry. In 2001 he was awarded the PEN USA West Freedom-to-Write Award and the Prince Claus Prize , and in 2003 he received the Lannan Literary Fellowship . In 2005 he received the Hemingway Foundation PEN Award for GraceLand . Chris Abani is a Middleton Fellow at the University of Southern California and Visiting Professor at the University of California, Riverside .

Others

Chris Abani took part in the 2004 Berlin International Literature Festival . In 2015 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
