Dennis Lynds
Dennis Lynds (born January 15, 1924 in St. Louis , Missouri ; died August 19, 2005 in San Francisco ) was an American writer who mainly published detective novels under various pseudonyms ( William Arden , Michael Collins , Mark Sadler , John Crowe , Carl Decker , Maxwell Grant ). In German-speaking countries he is known under the name William Arden as the author of the youth crime series Die Drei ??? .
Career
Dennis Lynds was the son of John Douglas Lynds and Gertrude Hyem, an actor couple who toured frequently. He grew up in New York . During World War II he was in the US Army and was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star . He then studied chemistry ( Bachelor of Hofstra College in 1949) and journalism ( Master of Syracuse University in 1951) and then worked as an editor of several chemical journals. Since 1969 he has lived as a freelance writer in California. He was married to the writer Gayle Lynds .
As Michael Collins , he wrote two science fiction novels (the space opera Lukan War , 1969, and The Planets of Death , 1970) and was best known for the Dan Fortune series , a series about a one-armed investigator in the he published nineteen novels. For the youth crime series The Three Investigators - known in Germany as The Three Question Marks - he wrote fourteen books under the name William Arden . As Maxwell Grant , he also wrote two novels around the pulp hero The Shadow ( The Shadow Strikes , 1964, and The Shadow: Destination Moon , 1987).
Lynds has received numerous prizes, including the Edgar Allan Poe Award for the best first novel in 1968 ( Act Of Fear ) and in 1988 THE EYE for the literary life of a writer by the Private Eye Writers of America (jointly with Wade Miller) .
