Nicolas Freeling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolas Freeling , actually Nicolas Davidson (born March 3, 1927 in London , † July 20, 2003 in Mutzig , Département Bas-Rhin ), was a British writer who spent most of his life in continental Europe (Netherlands, France).

Freeling's writing career began when he was sentenced to three weeks in prison after being convicted of theft. Before that he had worked in various activities (military, gastronomy).

The British television series Van der Valk (1972–1977), loosely based on his Van der Valk crime novels, made him famous. However, the television series with Barry Foster in the title role does not follow the storylines of the novels, nor does it do justice to the character of Van der Valks.

The novel The King of the Rainy Country won the 1967 Edgar Allan Poe Award ( Best Novel category ) from the Mystery Writers of America . In addition, Freeling won the Grand prix de littérature policière ( International category ) in 1965 for the novel Frontière belge (German: Van der Valk and the smuggler ; original: Question of Loyalty ).
