Mars trilogy

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy is a series of three award-winning science fiction - novels , from human colonization of Mars act. The book titles are based on the color of the planet during its history. It starts with the original red Mars, through green Mars, which is inhabited by plants, to blue Mars, whose water is now in a liquid state.
content
The story begins in 2026 with the voyage of a ship with 100 Mars colonists ( first hundred ) who will establish the first permanent settlements on Mars in 2027 . The chapters are told from the perspective of changing members of the group of the first hundred . Robinson knows how to convincingly model the limited perspective and the social feeling of the various protagonists. Above all, however, the Martian trilogy is hard science fiction : The technical possibilities of a Martian colonization are realistically developed in detail, with long treatises on space travel , geology , architecture , medicine , terraforming et cetera. The effects of such an enterprise on psychology , sociology , politics and even religion are described, from the problems of human coexistence in a confined space to the most varied of ideas of a just world order.
At the beginning of the individual large chapters, episodes that are independent of time or space are inserted, which contribute to a better understanding of the history and personal background of important people.
interpretation
If the focus of the first volume is on the technical aspects, with the second volume it shifts to the political and social area. The episode of the eponymous colors refers ostensibly to the change of Mars through terraforming. However, an analogy can also be found in terms of content: Red Mars focuses on major technical projects and “revolutionary” optimism, not unlike the early Soviet Union . This interpretation is supported by a Russian parity in the first group of colonists, as well as frequent comparisons with Siberia . The second book, Green Mars , focuses on the struggle of ecologically oriented groups against the exploitation of Mars, while Blue Mars deals with the social problems of an aging aristocracy (whose color is traditionally blue) of the first hundred .
reception
The first book in the series won the Nebula Award in 1994 , part two was nominated for it. Part two and part three also received the Hugo and Locus awards.
