Joan Carol Dennison Vinge (born April 2, 1948 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American science fiction writer.

Life

Vinge first studied art in college but later switched her major to receiving her bachelor's degree in anthropology from San Diego State University in 1971 .

Her first marriage was from 1972 to 1979 with the science fiction author Vernor Vinge . In 1980 she married the science fiction editor James Frenkel , with whom she has two children.

She was able to publish her first story Tin Soldier in 1974 in the Orbit 14 anthology series. Further stories followed in various science fiction magazines such as Analog , Asimov's Science Fiction and Omni as well as various anthologies.

In 1978 she received her first Hugo Award for her story Eyes of Amber (German: Bernsteinaugen ) and in 1981 for the novel The Snow Queen (German: Die Schneekönigin ) another Hugo and the Locus Award . In 1979, her story Fireship won an award in the Analog Readers Poll . Her novel Psion (1982) was named one of the best books of the year for young adults by the American Library Association . She has been nominated for other awards, including the John W. Campbell Best New Writer Award .

In addition to the novel cycles Heaven's Belt , Snow Queen and Cat , Vinge wrote a number of novel versions . Your Return of the Jedi Storybook to Return of the Jedi was for two months, the number one on the New York Times Book Review List hardcover book and also the best-selling 1983. Other novel versions of Vinge include Dune , Mad Max - Beyond the Thunder Dome and The Day of the Hawk

In 2002, Vinge suffered a brain injury in a serious car accident that affected her writing for many years. It wasn't until 2011 that a new book by her appeared with the novel version of the film Cowboys & Aliens .
