Heinz Gartmann
Heinz Gartmann , pseudonym Werner Wehr , (* 12. December 1917 in Dessau , † 7 August 1960 in Stockholm ) was a German rocket - engineer , journalist and author in the field of history of technology and aerospace -literature.
Life
Gartmann graduated from the humanistic grammar school in Bernburg (Saale) and studied from 1937 to 1941 at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg the field of aircraft engine construction , which he graduated as a graduate engineer .
He started his career as a research engineer at BMW in the rocket development plant in Zühlsdorf near Berlin . Here Gartmann worked closely with the well-known rocket engine designer Helmut Graf von Zborowski , who headed the three BMW rocket plants and made groundbreaking inventions in jet propulsion technology. Until 1945 Gartmann worked as a group and department head in BMW rocket development in Berlin and Munich. He was involved in the development of rocket combustion chambers and the rocket engine for the well-known X-4 anti-aircraft missile .
After the war ended in May 1945, Gartmann first went to the USA as a research assistant , where he worked for the Air Material Command in Wright Field in 1946 and 1947 .
After his return he published popular science books and newspaper articles with a focus on space travel . From 1949 to 1960 he was a board member of the Society for Space Research e. V. Stuttgart, co-initiator of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and since 1950 publisher of the specialist magazine Weltraumfahrt of Umschau-Verlag , Frankfurt am Main.
