Walter Bohatsch (born August 8, 1949 ) is an Austrian graphic designer and typographer . He has internationalized Austrian graphic design and brought influences from Switzerland, Canada and the USA to Vienna.

Career

Walter Bohatsch took a course in advertising and sales at the University of World Trade in Vienna before going to Canada for five years. He worked for various design studios in Montreal, including Gottschalk & Ash Int. In 1978 Walter Bohatsch returned to Europe and completed the postgraduate course in typography, graphic and film design with Wolfgang Weingart , Armin Hoffmann and Peter von Arx at the Basel School of Design . In the early 1980s, he founded his own graphic design office in Vienna. In 1988, Walter Bohatsch completed courses in computer and graphic design at Carnegie Mellon University and Harvard University .

Walter Bohatsch is the initiator of the Typoji project and the creator of the Typoji . Typojis are special typographic characters (glyphs) for special terms. Their functional use is based on knowledge of the semantic meaning of the respective terminology.

He is a member of the world-renowned AGI (Alliance Graphique International).

Texts by Bohatsch and works by his office have been published in numerous international specialist publications. Walter Bohatsch is a juror at national and international competitions as well as a speaker at international congresses and universities.

Teaching

From 1989 to 1991 Walter Bohatsch taught experimental and computer-aided typography at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (master class Tino Erben). From 1997 to 1998 he held a teaching position for integral design at the Vorarlberg / InterMedia University of Applied Sciences .
