Kitty Margolis

Kitty Margolis (born November 7, 1955 in San Mateo , California ) is an American modern jazz singer .

Live and act

Margolis studied at Harvard University and San Francisco State University (with John Handy ). Then she began performing in the Bay Area jazz clubs and regional festivals. In 1989 her first album "Live At the Jazz Workshop" was released. She performed almost every year at the Monterey Jazz Festival and subsequently also at other festivals in America, as well as at the North Sea Jazz Festival and in Norway . The singer has performed regularly in Europe and Japan since the 1990s, where she also accompanied prominent sidemen such as Red Holloway and John Handy. On her second, award-winning album "Evolution" (1994) she played with Joe Henderson and Kenny Brooks , on the album "Straight Up With a Twist" (1997) with Roy Hargrove .

It belongs to the faculty of the Jazz School in Berkeley and gives private lessons and master classes at universities. From 2001 on she headed the vocal department of the “ International Association for Jazz Education ”.

The critic Nancy Ann Lee ("JazzTimes") placed the contralto in 1994 in a row with Sarah Vaughan , Ella Fitzgerald , Carmen McRae and Betty Carter . The vocalist was named the best young singer by the critics of Down Beat in 1994 and 1995 .
