The Deli Creeps are an experimental rock band, consisting of singer Maximum Bob (real life Robert Barnum), guitarist Buckethead (real life Brian Carroll), drummer Pinchface (real life Michael Hakopian) and changing bassists, most recently Dan Monti .

biography

The band was formed in the late 1980s in Claremont , Southern California before the leading members moved to San Francisco . In 1991 a first demo tape was recorded with bassist Tony Black, which gave the group a certain underground reputation. Maximum Bob also worked on the debut album by Mr. Bungle, produced by John Zorn . A little later, however, the creeps dissolved for the first time.

A reunion in 1996 brought about another demo, but a little later they parted ways again. In the meantime, only Buckethead had gained national fame through his contacts with John Zorn, Bill Laswell and Bootsy Collins . In the summer of 2003 the band was reformed with Josh Bockles on bass for some gigs in California, Buckethead was at the same time with Guns N 'Roses .

In 2005 the first regular album Dawn Of The Deli Creeps was released , recorded and published by Travis Dickerson . Bass was now played by Dan Monti (known as the sound engineer for Buckethead, Serj Tankian , Slipknot and Metallica ). With Random Killing is a song that was already released with alternative lyrics as I Come In Peace by Buckethead on Giant Robot in 1994 and as The Power And The Gory on the Cornbugs debut album in 1999 , but in this form is the actual original. Also, Flesh For The Beast to find on the album, a song was written to the band for the same horror film by Terry M. West.

Video recordings of the band, especially from the early phase, appeared in 2006/07 on the Buckethead DVDs Secret Recipe and Young Buckethead , including complete concerts from 1990/91.

Although the future of the band is currently (October 2008) uncertain, the band members of the last lineup are also working on numerous joint projects outside of the Creeps . Maximum Bob is one of the guest singers on the Serj Tankian- produced album Enter The Chicken and also on the practice album Profanation (Preparation for a Coming Darkness) , while Dan Monti recorded and co-produced numerous solo albums Bucketheads. Next to Bryan Mantia, Pinchface is the most frequent drummer at the guitarist's side. In 2006 Buckethead, Pinchface and Monti toured the US as a trio.

style

The band name is made up of the abbreviation for delicatessen shop ( deli ) and the English word for disgust or creeps . Accordingly, the band members regularly appear in aprons, as they are usually worn by butchers and butchers . Buckethead also wears his usual face mask or variations of it, but mostly hats instead of the cardboard bucket.

The formation's distinguishing features are in particular the lyrics of Maximum Bob, which deal with sex and other everyday events, and the performance of this, which is differentiated between harmonic singing and psychotic screaming:

"I'm making a bid for your digested meat
I want to feel your colon heat
I'm bustin 'wide open your cushioned seat
I'll park my pink wagon in your brown street

Bend Up
Let me see what you ate
Bend Up
Do you want a taste? "

- Bend Up

The spoken song with onomatopoeic hangers, specially developed for the Deli Creeps, is also unmistakable :

“OOOOOHHHH GEEEEEEEZ… Aha - That's a mighty nice car you got. Let's say;
Whatdaya say, you just, uh, you know, hellohowyoudoin ', scoot on over,
make some room, let me hop on in; I want a ride, huh? "

- Can I Have A Ride

Musically, this is supported or counteracted by all of Buckethead's typical stylistic devices: Chromatic guitar runs and dissonant playing noises, but also simple riffs and chord progressions or short quotations from blues and country .
