Jennifer Batten (born November 29, 1957 in New York ) is an American electric guitarist .

biography

Jennifer Batten started playing electric guitar at the age of eight. From 1979 she completed her studies at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood , California , founded by Howard Roberts in 1977 , where she made friends with the guitarist Steve Lynch , who, like Batten, was involved in the development of the tapping technique that was becoming popular at the time . After graduating, she played in several local bands and was the first woman to teach at GIT

She became known to a larger audience through her engagement as the lead guitarist of Michael Jackson , for which she was selected from 100 guitarists in a 1987 casting. Until Jackson's HIStory Tour in 1997, she was an integral part of his live band and stage show. She caused a sensation not only with her extravagant appearance, but also with her innovative guitar playing and the perfecting of the so-called tapping technique that had become popular with Edward Van Halen . For example, she played the solo for the song Beat it live at Jackson's concerts, even if the original Beat it solo of the record version was subsequently mixed together from several solos that Edward Van Halen had recorded in the studio. She also used this technique to play the Hummelflug by Rimski-Korsakow , which was originally composed for orchestra and which makes high demands as a solo piece.

During her time with Michael Jackson, she recorded her first solo album Above, Below And Beyond in 1992 , which was produced by Michael Sembello . In 1995 she founded her own band, The Immigrants , and released the album One Planet Under One Groove with her in 1995 . The second solo album Momentum , which is more oriented towards world music , followed in 1997. A year later she was accepted into his band by Jeff Beck , worked with him for three years and played on two of his albums ( Who Else! And You had it Coming ). Her third solo album Whatever was released in Japan in September 2007.

Jennifer Batten has performed numerous live performances, contributed to numerous other CDs, had a guest appearance in Michael Jackson's film Moonwalker and published several textbooks and videos, especially on the subject of tapping.

In January 2016 she was awarded the She Rocks Icon Award excellent and in the Gallery of the Greats of Guitar Player magazine added.
