Rage Against the Machine is the debut album by the rock band Rage Against the Machine , released in 1992 . The songs contain political statements by the band and can be assigned to the crossover style emerging in the early 1990s , which is a mixture of rap and rock elements. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts and number 45 on the Billboard 200 charts.

About the album

The guitar solos on Rage Against The Machine are, in contrast to the band's later albums, in which guitarist Tom Morello was more influenced by hip-hop , still oriented towards the genres of metal and funk . The album is also known for its high production quality. Some audio sites and magazines are even testing new amplifiers and loudspeakers with it, especially with the piece Take the Power Back .

reception

Eduardo Rivadavia gave the album the second highest rating of four and a half stars in the e-zine Allmusic :

"Ultimately, if there's any disappointment to be had with this near-perfect album, it's that it still towers above subsequent efforts as the unequivocal climax of Rage Against the Machine's vision."

"Ultimately, if there's any disappointment with this near-perfect album, it is that it still towers above later efforts as a unique culmination of the vision of Rage Against The Machine."

- Eduardo Rivadavia, all music

At Sputnikmusic , the album received five out of five possible points. Andrew Kotick wrote there:

"Overall: This was an utterly mind-blowing album which made me wonder about how well this band blends funk, metal, hip-hop, and punk rock to make it their own unique sound [...]."

"Overall: That was a completely crazy album that made me wonder how well this band mixes funk, metal, hip-hop and punk-rock to make it their own unique sound […]."

- Andrew Kotick, Sputnikmusic

The English magazine Q called the album in 2001 "one of the heaviest albums of all time". In 2003 it was ranked 368 of the best 500 albums of all time by American Rolling Stone . In 2013, the album was voted 85th on The 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time list by the same magazine .

It's also on the list of 1001 albums to hear before you die by Robert Dimery.

Music critic Piero Scaruffi places the album at number 11, right after Electric Wizards Come My Fanatics ... and ahead of Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium , in its classification of the best metal albums of all time.

In October 2011, the album was voted # 5 on the Guitar World - Top Ten List of Guitar Albums of 1992 .

Wake Up is part of the soundtrack of the first Matrix film. Killing in the Name was used in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Guitar Hero II . Different versions of Bombtrack and Take the Power Back can be found in the Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killers .

Artwork

The cover shows the famous photo taken by Malcolm Browne in 1963 of the Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức from Vietnam , on which he burned himself . He protested against the regime of Ngô Đình Diệm and its suppression of Buddhism .

IRA activists , Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton and Bobby Sands are mentioned in the acknowledgments. There were also Ian MacKaye and Alec MacKaye from Minor Threat , since de la Rocha was straight edge at the time .

The lyrics of all songs, with the exception of Killing in the Name , can be found in the booklet.

The statement “ no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record ” (German: “No samples , keyboards or synthesizers were used to create these recordings”) can be found in the liner notes , as with the following albums .
