Alec MacKaye

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alec MacKaye (* 1966 in Washington, DC ) is an American musician, artist and writer, best known for the punk and hardcore bands Untouchables , The Faith and Ignition . However, he is far better known than the little brother of minor-threat / Fugazi front man Ian MacKaye . MacKaye's tantrums and emotional outbursts while performing live made him one of the most famous members of Washington's punk / hardcore scene in the early 80s.

Life

At the age of 13 MacKaye founded the punk band Untouchables, which had their first appearance in 1979 in the basement of the parents of Teen Idles singer Nathan Strejcek, together with the Teen Idles, the band of MacKaye's brother at the time. Alec MacKaye, asleep with his head on his knees, photographed by Susie Josephson, was the cover motif of the recordings Minor Threat EP , First Two 7 ″ s on a 12 ″ and Complete Discography . It is one of the most famous covers of the hardcore punk scene and has also been used (against the will of the band) for a poster by Nike . MacKaye's hands with the straight-edge X were already featured on the Minor Disturbance EP of Teen Idles.

MacKaye was to take over from Henry Rollins at State of Alert when he moved to Black Flag . However, MacKaye refused to sing Rollins' lyrics. He then founded various bands and rehearsed with them, but there was never a solid constellation until he founded The Faith in 1981 , whose split with Void is one of the classics of American hardcore punk. The band existed until 1982. In the mid-1980s the band Ignition followed . This band released two albums and various singles through Dischord Records . After a serious motorcycle accident, Alec MacKaye had to cut back a little musically.

In the mid-1990s, MacKaye joined The Warmers as a singer and guitarist. Their album Same was released in 1996 on Dischord Records. Unlike MacKaye's other bands, The Warmers combined memorable riffs with indie rock influences. The album gained some attention on the college radio charts.

MacKaye works for Dischord Records, the independent label that Minor Threat had built at the time, and is an employee of the Phillips Collection art museum in Washington, DC MacKaye also tries his hand at being an artist and writer. Mondo James Dean , an anthology of poems and short stories by Richard Peabody and Lucinda Ebersole, is dedicated to him. He was also involved as a contemporary witness in the film American Hardcore , a documentary about the hardcore scene.
