American Hardcore is an independent documentary film from 2006 depicting the first generation of the American hardcore scene.
content
With numerous amateur concert recordings and interviews with big names in the scene, the film, inspired by Steven Blush's book of the same name, portrays the early American hardcore scene. He creates a connection between the repressive politics of the Reagan era and the anti-authoritarian, sometimes explicitly political character of this subculture . The film sheds light on various aspects of movement, such as the DIY ethic and straight edge , but also violence at concerts.
The film lets numerous protagonists of the early hardcore scene have their say, including Ian MacKaye ( Teen Idles , Minor Threat , later Fugazi , among others ), Henry Rollins ( SOA , Black Flag ), Dave Smalley ( DYS , Dag Nasty ), Phil Anselmo (later singer with Pantera ), Jimmy Gestapo (later singer with Murphy's Law ) and even Moby , who was then playing in the band Vatican Commandos. Alternating with the interviews, American Hardcore also shows a large number of live recordings from bands such as the Bad Brains , Black Flag, Minor Threat, MDC , the Untouchables and others.
History of origin
Writer Blush and filmmaker Rachmann had known each other since the early 1980s when both were active in various local hardcore scenes. At that time, Rachmann was already filming material in Boston that was later used in American Hardcore .
Soundtrack
A soundtrack with 26 tracks by 26 contemporary bands was released for the film on Rhino Records .
