Negative Approach are a hardcore band from Detroit , Michigan, USA . Together with Minor Threat , Bad Brains and Black Flag, they are among the pioneers of the genre. Like many other US hardcore bands of the time, they were rather unknown during their heyday, but are now among the best known "old school" bands.

history

Negative Approach was founded by John Brannon and Pete Zelewski in August 1981, allegedly after attending a Black Flag concert. The band's first line-up consisted of Brannon on vocalist, Rob McCullough on guitar, Pete Zelewski on bass and Zuheir Fakhoury on drums. After a short time, Zelewski left the band to form The Allied. He was replaced by Rob McCullough's brother Graham. Fakhoury was replaced by Chris "OP" Moore after the "Process of Elimination" EP . The resulting line-up with Brannon / McCullough / McCullough / Moore did not change until Negative Approach split up. After an appearance on a sampler and a first demo, the first real studio recording was released in 1982. The self-titled EP was released by Touch & Go . This sound carrier is considered a classic today. The following year the Tied Down LP was published.

The band split during a 1983 tour and played their last show in Memphis . Brannon then put together a line-up of Kelly Dermody (guitar), Dave (bass) and Mike (drums), recorded the Rice City demo in 1984 and went on tour again.

In 2006, Negative Approach was revived by vocalist Brannon and temporary drummer Moore. The band occasionally gives concerts of old material, and Taang! Records released a compilation of unreleased versions of old pieces. In 2015 the band completed a European tour with over 30 venues.

Influences and style

The style of Negative Approach was authoritative for many bands that followed. Their music is a mixture of music from bands such as The Stooges or Discharge and contained influences from English Oi! -Bands like The 4-Skins . Allmusic describes the band as the "undisputed champions" of hardcore in the American Midwest in the early 1980s. The band's music is straightforward, extreme and violent; on the album Tied Down also be metal conditions influencing the fate audible. AllMusic reviewer Matt Kantor described the 1992 compilation album Total Recall as "essential (...) for anyone who wants to understand hardcore".
