First Two 7 ″ s on a 12 ″ , often referred to as Minor Threat LP or First 2 7 ″ , is a compilation album by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat . It was released in 1984 via Dischord Records and includes the first two EPs Minor Threat EP and In My Eyes .

History of origin

Dischord Records , which was started in 1980 by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson as a do-it-yourself label, was a cult label for the flourishing hardcore punk scene in the United States in 1984. It had been a tax-paying company since 1983, but the label has also lacked money since then. Instead, the label was in the red. Minor Threat themselves were one of the most important hardcore punk bands of their time. The first two EPs, however, were sold out and only available at very high prices. In order to save the label and at the same time satisfy the demand for the older releases, two releases were conceived in early 1984. The Year in 7 '' brought together the first releases from Dischord Records: the EPs from SOA , Teen Idles , Government Issue and Youth Brigade . The second release was First Two 7 '' on a 12 '' by Minor Threat.

Publications

The first edition appeared with a blue cover, like the Minor Threat EP . showed a photograph of Ian MacKaye's brother Alec MacKaye with his head bowed and shaved. The photo was taken by Susie Josephson Horgan. In the course of time the record has been reissued again and again, among other things with blue, green, red and yellow tones. In order to avoid the pricing policy of bootleggers and dealers, the price for the LP was printed on the back cover.

reception

Since the album title is not on the record cover, the album is often referred to as a Minor Threat LP or Minor Threat album . Although the two EPs were also available individually, this release in particular is considered essential by critics today. Allmusic even leads the release as a debut album , although the actual debut Out of Step was released a year earlier. Allmusic's Dean McFarlane compared the importance of the compilation to the Sex Pistols' Pink Floyd's The Wall and Never Mind the Bollocks . However, he advised the compilation Complete Discography , which includes all the songs by Minor Threat. The German Rolling Stone listed the album in 2011 as one of the 50 most important punk releases.
