Salad Days is an EP from the hardcore punk band Minor Threat and is the last release with new songs. It was released in 1985, two years after the band split up.

History of origin

In the middle of 1983 the members were so divided that it was no longer possible to continue the band. In particular, the musical direction of the band became an important question. While Lyle Preslar and Brian Baker wanted to orient themselves more towards the mainstream musically and were enthusiastic about the new U2 album, Ian MacKaye felt uncomfortable with it. There was also an appearance on September 23, 1983 at the Lansburgh Center , together with the funky hardcore band Big Boys and the funk band Trouble Funk . The aim was to combine DC hardcore punk with Go-Go, a DC radio variant. Around 1,200 fans were represented that evening. The absence of a separation of the stage, which is common in hardcore punk, turned into a disaster that evening, so that Preslar demanded a cordon after the gig. MacKay, who had campaigned against such a thing for years, drew a line that evening and did not appear again for the rehearsals.

At a last band meeting the future of the band was discussed and it was decided to split up. A final EP was planned as a concession to Jeff Nelson trying to bring the band back together. The recordings were made on December 14, 1983 at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington County . Three songs were recorded, including a cover version of Good Guys (Don't Wear White) . The song was written by Ed Cobb for The Standells . The EP was released in 1985 as the 15th release by Dischord Records.

Music style and lyrics

Although Salad Days still a very fast hardcore punk EP, compared to the early works of the band, the speed was, however, significantly reduced. You can also hear an acoustic guitar and a glockenspiel , both of which were very unusual for hardcore punk. Ian MacKaye showed beginnings of vocals on these songs for the first time, but did not renounce his characteristic screams and his spoken chants. The text of Salad Days is a “painful analysis” of the hardcore scene in DC and ends with the lines “We called those the Salad Days / We called those the good old days / What a fucking lie / I call it a lie” ( German: "We called this time the 'Salad Days' / We called it the good old days / what a damned lie / I call it a lie") From today's perspective, Salad Days acts as a preview of MacKaye's later work in bands like Embrace and Fugazi .
