Forest of Equilibrium is the debut album by the British doom metal band Cathedral . It was released in 1991 by the Earache Records label and is considered a classic of the genre.

history

Singer Lee Dorrian , who had recently been active in Napalm Death , continuously urged the band to play slower during rehearsals. Instrumentally, however, references to Grindcore remained recognizable, as the band “slowed down its typical guitar sounds to an almost unbearable tempo”.

At the same time, Dorrian himself was in a stylistic transition phase with regard to his singing. In order to change, he oriented himself on the one hand to Michael Gira from the Swans and on the other hand to Messiah Marcolin, who worked for Candlemass for many years and at the time with the Swedish doom metal band Stillborn , according to Birchmeier, a balancing act from “Singing with a touch of harmony and the emitting of death-like growls ”.

The sound quality of the recording is poor, but you can also hear a "dark" quality.

In 2011 the band released the album under the title "Anniversary" as a live re-recording from a concert in 2010.

Cover

The cover is by Dave Patchett , who was exhibiting in a gallery in Coventry at the time. Dorrian liked the pictures and got in touch with Patchett, who surprisingly lived in his neighborhood. After a few conversations, Patchett accepted the assignment and developed the painting based on Dorrian's instructions. The references to Hieronymus Bosch are particularly striking .

reception

Forest of Equilibrium is ranked 12th in a list of the best metal albums by Piero Scaruffi , while Jose Carlos Santos wrote of a "classic of the classics, trend-setting for Doom and Metal alike".
