Dinosaur Jr. is an independent band founded in 1984 by J Mascis (real name: Joseph Donald Mascis Jr.) and Lou Barlow under the name Dinosaur in Amherst (Massachusetts) , whose sound is heavily influenced by punk , heavy metal and noise rock , however is also characterized by catchy melodies.
Band history
In 1985, Dinosaur released their self-titled debut album on Homestead Records . Due to the success of the album, the hippie band Dinosaurs (with Grateful Dead writer Robert Hunter ) became aware of the band and forced them to change their name. In allusion to the age of the hippies, J Mascis added the abbreviation "Jr.".
For the next two records, the band switched to the Californian label SST . The band's second album You're Living All Over Me was highly praised by the trade press in 1987 . During the recording of Bug in 1988, there were disputes between Barlow and Mascis, whereupon Barlow had to leave the band and concentrate completely on his previous side project Sebadoh .
From 1991 the Dinosaur Jr. albums appeared on Blanco y Negro and Sire , two sub-labels of the Warner Music Group . They were directed by the undisputed band leader Mascis, who also fired drummer Murph in 1993. He then played with constantly changing musicians such as Mike Watt , Mike Johnson and Kurt Fedora. 1994 contributed Dinosaur Jr a title for Kiss - tribute album Kiss My Ass in. In 1998 Mascis broke up the band and from then on went solo as J Mascis + The Fog . However, he was the only permanent member of the band back in the time of Dinosaur Jr. J Mascis also produced other bands such as Buffalo Tom and Sonic Youth .
Dinosaur Jr. was never really successful commercially, but it enjoyed cult status in independent circles. The band's hits included a cover version of Just Like Heaven from The Cure , Freak Scene from the Bug album and Feel The Pain from the Without A Sound album . There is also a music video by Spike Jonze for the latter , in which the band plays golf in the middle of New York.
In spring 2005 the band confirmed a reunion with the original line-up. J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph played at several festivals in England, Germany, Spain and Japan in the summer of 2005. In 2007 the comeback album Beyond was released , the first since 1988, which was recorded with the original line-up. Farm followed in the early summer of 2009, I Bet On Sky in 2012 , and Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not in 2016 .
