Axel Schulz (born October 23, 1960 as Axel Knabben in Kempen ) is a German music manager , organizer and club operator. Since 1993 he has been the manager of the band Die Ärzte .

Life

Schulz played the saxophone and other woodwind instruments in bands like Family 5 and Foyer des Arts in the 1980s . After fleeing from conscription to West Berlin, he made friends with Bela B and Farin Urlaub from Die Ärzte and made several guest appearances on stage and in the studio between 1984 and 1986. His musical influences include Frank Zappa , Led Zeppelin , Jimi Hendrix , the Rolling Stones , Neil Young , Lou Reed , soul , funk , jazz rock and free jazz.

From 1985 to 1988 Schulz worked as a promoter for the indie sales company EFA (Energie für Alle), until he and business partner Irmgard Schmitz took over the event company Loft Concerts , which he still manages today and with which he became the first West German after the fall of the Berlin Wall organized a concert in East Berlin: On December 21, 1989, the Einstürzende Neubauten played a double concert in VEB Elektrokohle Lichtenberg . In addition, Schulz ran and operated Berlin clubs such as the Columbia Theater (formerly Fritz Club), the Postbahnhof and the Columbiahalle .

Manager of The Doctors

In March 1993 Schulz took over the moderation of the talks on the reunification of Die Ärzte . One of the demands of the artists was never to have a manager again, which is why Axel Schulz took on the role of “manager”. In order to achieve an almost complete independence from industrial companies, Die Ärzte and Schulz founded the record company Hot Action Records and the PMS Musikverlag in 1997 , which he still manages today. In 1998 the label released its first album 13 and the single A Pig Named Men , both of which became number one hits . In addition to Die Ärzte , Schulz also managed the German band Fischmob .
