13 is the eighth studio album by the German punk rock band Die Ärzte . It was released on May 25, 1998 as the first release on the band's own label Hot Action Records and achieved platinum status in Germany , and gold in Austria and Switzerland .

background

The album is the 8th regular studio album by the doctors. A black billiard ball can be seen on the cover , but instead of the usual printing "8" for the black ball in billiards, the number "13" is shown. As long as you are not limited to the band's regular album releases, this album is also the 13th of the group.

The vinyl version of the album was released in a limited edition of 500 as a double EP in 10 ″ format, making it the smallest edition of a doctors album to this day and is therefore a rarity among collectors. The PolyGram group took over the distribution of the album .

Songs

Party stinks

The introductory conversation and the conversation at the end of the song are quotes from the series The Simpsons . Homer Simpson speaks the opening words to a guest at his party in the twentieth episode of the second season. The conversation at the end of the song comes from a flashback to Homer's party during an argument with Marge.

Men are pigs

The single "A Pig Named Men" reached number 1 on the chart lists in the entire German-speaking area, making it one of the band's most commercially successful releases. Among other things, the now very popular video for the song "Men Are Pigs" contributed to this positive result. It shows a shootout between the video game heroine Lara Croft and the three band members, at the end of which the musicians are defeated. In the song Men Are Pigs , Georg Thomalla can be heard as the voice actor for Jack Lemmon : The sentence Men, these terrible, hairy beasts ... comes from the classic film Some Like It Hot (1959) with Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe .

Men are pigs has not been played live by the band for a long time, because they did not like that the song was played at the Oktoberfest , or that cover versions of the song appeared on various Ballermann CDs. Visitors to the Oktoberfest and Ballermann fans are not the band's target audience. From several interviews it can be seen that the band didn't want to be reduced to men are pigs . Apart from that, it is difficult to play Motown as a three-man combo . Despite everything, the song reappeared in the setlist of the last concert of the Das Comeback tour in 2012 .

More songs

In Crafty is an ironic representation of drummer Felsenheimer, allegedly formed and less intellectual compared to Farin Urlaub (Excerpt: "(...) I am loyal but stupid (...)").

The grotesque song is an ironic protest song against protest songs, demonstrators and the ecological movement from the pen of Farin Urlaub, who is himself a Greenpeace member.

On the album there is the hidden track Lady in the pregap at the beginning of the CD. In the intro, Gene Simmons speaks of Kiss . Depending on the medium (CD, MC, LP, single) contains men, pigs are a different sample .

In the song Der Infant there is a quote with the words "... the whole brain sucked away". The quote is from the film Starship Troopers by Paul Verhoeven. The song also quotes two songs by the Australian hard rock band AC / DC : At the beginning of the song Bela B. sings Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap , at the end of the song Highway to Hell is sung.
