Foyer des Arts is a German avant-garde pop band founded in 1981 by Max Goldt and Gerd Pasemann . As background singers took Annette Humpe and Gayle Tufts part.

Band history

Goldt and Pasemann first met in West Berlin in 1978 . They founded the band Aroma Plus , as the core of which they, supplemented by changing accompanying musicians, performed a few club appearances in West Berlin, as well as releasing their music - at that time still in English - on two self-distributed records.

In 1981 Aroma Plus was dissolved, whereupon Goldt and Pasemann recorded a completely improvised record, The Strange Secretary , under the project name Foyer des Arts . The single A Queen with Wheels underneath became a small hit on the local music scene, which brought Foyer des Arts the attention of the WEA . At the time, the big record companies were eager to sign all bands and artists who could be marketed as Neue Deutsche Welle . Although Foyer des Arts never saw themselves as part of this scene, a certain similarity to the style of avant-garde NDW bands such as Palais Schaumburg or Der Plan cannot be completely dismissed.

However, Foyer des Arts finally signed the contract with the WEA, which was very unfavorable for them, as they later realized. There they released their second record, Von Bullerbü nach Babylon . Success was only granted to them with the second single Worth Knowing About Erlangen (36th place in the Media Control Charts ). When further commercial success was slow in coming, the band was forced to make promo appearances that were extremely unpleasant for them , for example in the ZDF hit parade , which, however, did not improve sales in a satisfactory manner. WEA finally put Foyer des Arts on hold, refusing to release any more records until 1986, but not releasing them from their contract. During this time Max Goldt published his first solo recordings.

After the contract finally ended in 1986, the album The inability to have breakfast was released relatively quickly on the independent label Forty-Five , which was again granted some success in the underground . Foyer des Arts developed into a well-known band on the independent German music scene, which in 1988 even led to an invitation to the legendary John Peel sessions on British radio. After the release of the regular album Ein Kuss in der Irrtumstaverne in 1988 and the double live album Was ist super? In 1989 the band was not heard for a long time. In 1995 the album Die Menschen was released , which is considered a "farewell album ". This was followed by the best-of album Could Bees Fly in 2000.
