Some grassland areas are also mowed to produce winter fodder for the flock of sheep. In the winter of 2014/15 a demilitarized Leopard 1 tank rummaged over parts of the Trupbacher Heide in order to create new space for pioneer plants and animal species such as plants, amphibians and insects that were not competitive.
