Smoosh is an American indie pop band from Seattle . It was founded in 2000 by the sisters Asya (born February 2, 1992 ) and Chloe (born March 5, 1994 ). In 2007, the third sister Maia (born September 5, 1996 ) joined the band.

Band history

In 2000, Asya and Chloe happened to meet Jason McGerr, the later drummer of Death Cab for Cutie , in a music store where they were supposed to buy a violin. They left the business with a new drum kit for Chloe and a business card from McGerr, who was teaching at a music school at the time.

In the same year, Smoosh released their first single, Tomato Mistakes , which only contained the two songs Free to Stay and But Now I Know and which they sent for free to anyone who was interested.

Four years later, in September 2004, they released their first album, She Like Electric .

The second album Free to Stay , which was released in 2006, contained Find A Way, the track with which she was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! first appeared on television. On August 5, 2007, they performed at the Lollapalooza Festival. There they played a cover version of This Modern Love by the band Bloc Party , with whom they then went on tour in September of the same year. In 2008 they toured with the bands Tokyo Police Club and The Dresden Dolls .

The third album has been announced for 2010, the single We Are Our Own Lies is available for free on the Internet.

reception

  • Dirk Ducar describes the music in a review by She Like Electric as “ […] somehow good but also very strange. ". He attributes the unusually good quality for its age not least to the abilities of the producer and in the end draws the conclusion that Smoosh are “ […] personable without being able to really convince musically. "
  • On laut.de, Smoosh's music is referred to as " cute piano-supported pop rock [...] ".
  • Julia Gudzent writes on ox-fanzine.de about the album Free To Stay[...] the songs on it are just overflowing with teenage zest for life and unfounded bliss. "And comes to the conclusion that the music is" [...] initially refreshing like a first summer day after a long winter, but with time a bit too catchy. "
