Tokyo Police Club is a Canadian indie rock band . It was founded in 2005 in Newmarket , a suburb of Toronto .

Band history

The band was formed when the four friends decided in early 2005 to make music together again after their previous band broke up . After a short time, the first appearances in the Toronto region followed, but the band remained largely unknown. In the summer of 2005, at the end of their high school years together , the band members went their separate ways for a short time, but were given the opportunity to perform at the Pop Montréal Festival in the fall of that year . Through this performance the Canadian independent scene became aware of the band and in early 2006 Tokyo Police Club signed with Paper Bag Records .

Their debut EP A Lesson In Crime will be released in April 2006, followed by almost two years of intensive touring. Appearances at important festivals such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio , California , the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago , the Glastonbury Festival in England, and the Hurricane Festival in Scheeßel contribute to the band's steadily growing popularity.

On July 20, 2007, Tokyo Police Club announced that they had signed a new contract with the American record label Saddle Creek . In September 2007 the band started recording their first album Elephant Shell . This was partially recorded and produced by Peter Katis ( inter alia Interpol , The National ) in his Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport , Connecticut . For the other recordings in November 2007 in Toronto, the band engaged the producer of their EP, Jon Drew . The album was released in Germany on May 16, 2008.

In July 2010 the second album "Champ" was released. In the run-up to the release the song "Breakneck Speed" was put on the internet for free.

On a live tour on December 8, 2011, Tokyo Police Club played their hitherto unknown song "Beaches".

Trivia

In 2009 they had an appearance as the amateur band "Cold Splash" in an episode of the series Desperate Housewives and took part in a band competition. Her song "In a Cave" from the album "Elephant Shell" could be heard here.
