The Erieye is an Airborne Warning and Control System of the Swedish Air Force based on the successful Saab 340 regional airliner . Equipped on the back of the fuselage with a high-resolution radar of the type PS 890 from Ericsson in the form of a nine-meter-long rigid antenna, they can detect targets the size of an airplane at distances of 350 kilometers; Cruise missiles can be detected 150 kilometers away. Before the first flight of the machine on January 17, 1994, the radar system was tested from 1990 on a Fairchild Metro III .
The power supply for the highly complex electronics is ensured by a 60 kW gas turbine in the rear; the strong heat generated by the computer systems is compensated for by a heat exchanger in the luggage compartment.
