The airfield Unst ( IATA code : UNT ; ICAO code : EGPW , known as Unst Airport , Baltasound Airport and Ordale Airport ) is an airport on the island of Unst in Shetland , in the north of Scotland . Located in Ordale , 1.5 km southeast of Baltasound , it is the northernmost airfield in Great Britain. The airfield has a terminal building and an aircraft hangar .
history
The airfield was built in 1968 by the Royal Engineers . It was very busy in the early years, serving as a stopover for oil workers from Aberdeen and to the offshore oil rigs. However, the stopover was relocated to Scatsta Airport , and the airfield quickly lost its importance. In 1996 the airfield was effectively mothballed and is now only used occasionally for training and emergencies.
